Blind Item: Lots of Unsteadiness In St. Louis Radio

After the abrupt cleaning job at K-Hits last week, it seems the St. Louis radio landscape. Here’s a purposely vague summary of what we are hearing:

 1. It’s been about a year that this much talked about station has launched, what contracts will failed to be renewed?

 2. Could there be a shake up in the mornings for a station down the hall from item #1? We doubt it but contract negotiations aren’t starting off well.

The RFT Previews Up in the Air

up_in_the_air_georgeclooney_annakendrick1-500x331From The Riverfront Times blog DailyRFT about the recently St. Louis-filmed George Clooney flick:

The first local press screening of the Jason Reitman/George Clooney film Up In the Air — perhaps the most eagerly anticipated movie in St. Louis since that flick about the World’s Fair — happened this morning at the Tivoli in the Delmar Loop.

While we’ve been asked by the PR company to withhold any reviews or features until the theatrical release in December, it can’t hurt to share a few first impressions with you, loyal Daily RFT readers.

The ESPN Mothership Turns on WXOS

Yesterday was a big St. Louis sporting news day! Tony LaRussa made his decision to return to manage the Cardinals for at least 2010 official and confirmed the rumor that Mark McGwire would be on board as the team’s new hitting coach!

This is a major local news story that broke through the bounds of St. Louis and got national coverage. Obviously the network synonymous with sports, ESPN, picked up and story and when they needed that local view they turned to the obvious radio station choice…KMOX?!?!

St. Louis Radio’s Slow Decline Continues: JC Fired From K-HITS

jc_headshotIf a grouchy guy gets fired in a medium no one really cares about any more, does it make a press release? Turns out yes.

K-HITS 96, St. Louis’ only radio station playing exclusively classic rock hits from four decades, today announced a major shake-up in its daily programming. Effective immediately, The Showgram, K-HITS morning talk show, will be discontinued and replaced with an all-music format hosted by St. Louis radio veteran Rick Sanborn. Changes are also being made to the station’s late afternoon show. Long-time station personalities Katy Kruze and Carl “the Intern” Middleman have been let go.

KSDK’s Art Holliday Flips a Bitch at Work, Gets Sent Home

hollidayartnewHey look at that Jerry Berger finally delivered some actual gossip on his website as opposed to the blatherings of various St. Louis councilmen that no one cares about. Check out Art Holliday going postal at work!

NEWS IS NEWS: KSDK (Channel 5) anchor/producer Art Holliday is known around the dial for his affable good nature. But (as Congressional candidate Ed Martin might say) , even Atlas has to shrug. Holliday was missing from the station’s downtown studio Thursday, sent out by his bosses to cool down following a newsroom tirade earlier in the week. Holliday was loudly upset after the station aired a story about a memorial service for St. Louis police officer Julius Moore. According to Channel 5’s story, the young officer and father of three was shot and killed. According to every other news outlet (and the Police Department), he died of injuries sustained in an auto accident en route to assist a fellow Third District officer. The columnist commends Holliday for his outrage.

Some Piece From Gossip Girl is From St. Louis

Taylor_Momsen-Transformers_2_LA_Premiere-UHQ_Pictures_001

That vacant stare. That “I’m actually ok looking but at least I put in a little extra time with the makeup and hair so I’m decent looking and when you are drunk tonight you will think I’m the hottest girl on the planet but you’ll regret it because since I know I’m not actually all that great looking, I’m going to cling to you like I’m drowning.” vibe. This broad is from St. Louis isn’t she?!

WIL Jocks Make More Than Arch Jocks

Saw this little note over on fellow gossip maven site STLMedia:

Even though they are both owned by Bonneville, on-air folks at WIL make much more money than those at #1 WARH.

Maybe AFTRA affiliation is good for something, but you can bet there’s some chafing at WARH.

So maybe this is surprising to some people, it wasn’t here. Yes, its true our fair editor has a connection to radio parent company Bonneville as he was previously an employee, but that doesn’t matter. It doesn’t take much thought to figure out that 92.3 WIL is a personality driven station, just look at the marketing. 106.5 the Arch however is just the opposite. Sure they have great talent on there, but its not the focus, the music is. The Arch didn’t get to #1 by pimping Van and Rick or Michelle Steele, they did it by creating a station you turn on when you get to your office and leave it on all day. It’s background music.

Bernie Finds a New Avenue For Rams Suckage

Franklin_Will-with-BernieIn his weekly “Bernie’s Bits” column in the Post Dispatch, St. Louis sports scribe Bernie Miklasz opened a six pack of word whoop ass on the Rams. I know, a sports writer taking the Rams to task isn’t surprising. They suck. Royal. Bernie wasn’t talking about their on-field performance though, he was talking about the odd way they treat the media and the fans.

More “Who Cares?” News From KSDK’s Leisa Zigman: Wedding Day Flub

bridezilla_1Of course you want your wedding day to be perfect, but guess what? Not gonna happen. Everyone has something weird or crappy happen. Admittedly, some are worse off than others, but its always something.

For instance our first whirlwind marriage with super model Heidi Klum (Don’t ask her about. She’ll pretend like she won’t know what you are talking about.) was totally ruined when I was arrested outside her, I mean our, bathroom window for just standing there with a locket of my future wife’s hair and all those photos of us…well they are just of her, but someone has to take the photo, with the telephoto lens, from my van. Anyway…
