What follows is a list of the major players in local St. Louis media along with the reasons why they suck and what they can do to suck less. This is us giving back and you’re welcome everyone. We won’t even feel bad when you do some of this stuff in a few months and don’t bother to credit us.

This is going to be a continuing theme on this list, but STLToday is the biggest offender: Stop pretending the rest of the internet doesn’t exist. Don’t continue to waste your time covering national or world stories that have no connection to St. Louis, that’s what CNN, MSNBC, and (to a certain extent) Fox News are for, and people in St. Louis are aware of them. No one in St. Louis hears about an earthquake in China and pulls up STLToday for the story, so just stop wasting your time. Your sports section, clearly the biggest fish of the STLToday/PD, gets this nearly right. Maybe there’s a mention about national stories, but usually they have a St. Louis tie or are barely mentioned at all. While were on the subject of news, you don’t pay Derrick Goold or Bernie Miklasz enough, please give them some or all of Burwell’s money.

Good try KSDK, but a whiff for sure. One might ask: “Why the hell is local news channel KSDK making incorrect slide shows concerning the cast of a long-running national reality show that airs on a different local affiliate?” …and that would be a good question! Someone should definitely ask that.

This morning KMOX posted a story about a Wright City, Missouri man was hoarding a stash of panties, sex toys, and “feminine hygiene products” he allegedly acquired from various burglaries. They also make mention of the man’s new nickname (emphasis ours)…

A 19 year-old eastern Missouri man has a new nickname after police found him hoarding 59 pairs of women’s underwear along with female clothing, sex toys, photographs and feminine hygiene products in his bedroom.

Poor David Freese. The Cardinals third baseman got over his issues, but KLOU, being the “oldies” station, loves to bring up stuff people would just rather forget.

In fact, we’ve never understood why radio stations make their jocks come up with news stories to say in between songs and commercials, but they all do it and it’s always horrible. Usually the jocks stick with the lamest entertainment news possible: Kardashians, Britney Spears, something about the Twilight movies…but some, like KLOU’s Cindy Collins (2p – 7p) take the “just find some shit to talk about” job a little more seriously than others. Too bad she’s equally as horrible at fact checking as she is about pretending to take requests that aren’t already on the pre-defined playlist for the day.

Jenna Fischer Loves Imo’s

St. Louis native, and star of The Office which is amazingly still on TV for a a little while longer, Jenna Fischer was on Jimmy Kimmel Live and professed her love for Imo’s, while Kimmel listed off a bunch of other good places…but none of them were Imo’s, and Kimmel hates Imo’s, so he sucks. He’s right about Winslow’s Home though.

Of course, we’re still pretty upset with Jenna for not taking our interview request, but the fact that she loves Imo’s helps.

Wow, thanks Telegraph. The British paper recently had an article in their “Expat Life” section claiming that St. Louis is the best city in America for the Brits to visit. The author is Mark Sutherland, who moved to St. Louis 20 years ago and apparently has yet to have been murdered. Always nice to hear a success story!

The Rally Saint Louis project is a first-of-its-kind crowdsourcing and crowdfunding platform that generates ideas and uses funding from the region’s residents and then uses those ideas to help market greater Saint Louis. It has been over a year in the making, and it’s an effort unlike anything ever attempted, not just in the Saint Louis region, but across the U.S.

Interesting idea. We just hope there are more to the submissions than various hipster activities, and instead see some trying to focus on the big issues standing in the way of making the city considerably more livable: crime, education or swapping out our stale area government officials for shiny new ones.

KMOV’s Matt Sczesny Got Beat Up

KMOV (Channel 4) reporter Matt Sczesny and it wasn’t by someone who got overly frustrated after trying to spell Sczesny’s name phonetically like you’d imagine. Turns out it was just some guy who wandered over while they were on a story.

Sczesny was in Alorton standing outside a KMOV truck when a man walked up to him and asked if he could ask him a question. Sczesny said sure, and the man punched him, according to Sean McLaughlin, KMOV’s executive news director.

Fox2 Sports Broadcast: Headline Goes Here

Fox2 got really really close to getting their graphic about the Mets and Cardinals game right. Sure they missed the score, the two lines of notes, and the fact that we’re talking about baseball teams rather than the NFL, but they did get the names right, and judging by the shot, it did appear on TV.

Lets call it a 4 out of 10.

We don’t want to be too hard on them though, for all we know they probably just fired the guy that does that for them so now they’ve got some schmuck like “friends of the site” Charles Jaco or Chuckie Marlow who are back there at the controls in between one Chuck botching Todd Akin interviews, and the other holding the camera up in one hand MySpace-style, while he covers local high school football games.

KMOV to Add Sharon Reed as News Anchor

We’re no fans of the local news, but we’ve got to hand it to KMOV, they know how to collect attractive female anchors. Virginia Kerr, Jasmine Huda, and Clair Kellet are a good start, but St. Louis, welcome the newest contestent in the “hot reporter” ring. One who comes with an interesting past, so we’re hoping for an interesting future in St. Louis: Sharon Reed.

We got word late last night, and confirmed by Aaron Hooks (@athooks) on Twitter, that Reed will be the new KMOV anchor, replacing the departing Vickie Newton. She could be at the desk in just a week or two, but no official word has surfaced at the time of this writing.

Everyone knows and loves perusing Craigslist’s Missed Connections section, and while we don’t like to make a habit of it, we’re no different. KMOV’s Great Day in St. Louis Made a LipDub

Friday afternoon we got this via Twitter:

What’s this? KMOV’s Great Day in St. Louis is sending us video links now? What could it be? They said they had fun making it, so it couldn’t be a link to one of their local news broadcasts as no one has fun reading off St. Louis’ nightly murder list. We were really hoping it was going to be grainy night-vision footage of Kent Ehrhardt leaving a bag of flaming poo on Dave Murray’s doorstep, but after we clicked it turned out to be a “lipdub”…kinda.

Here it is:

No one really mouths along to all the words, and it’s not the full song, but it’s close enough and we’re suckers for posting lipdubs. Ok, we’ll take the bait. Lets break this thing down!

It’s your basic “do crazy stuff in the office” deal with a peppy song. It’s weird, but we’ll give them points for doing it and hopefully the other local news stations won’t follow. Maybe KTVI (Fox) could pull it off if was just April Simpson, but KSDK (NBC) won’t be able to since Mike Bush is way to serious, Cusumano would be worried about his hair falling off the whole time, and Leisa Zigman‘s nose isn’t safe being around all those waving arms.

As for the lipdub at hand, what we have here is four groups cut together with varying degrees of “giving a crap”:

1. The behind the scenes staff. — This was probably their idea since they are way more in to it that most of the other groups. Their’s even choreography with the rolling chair deal, and props like the mustaches and wigs.

2. The morning news anchors — In to it, definitely dancing around, but not enough that their going to do anything than jump around in their little gas station outfits (What’s that about? …never mind, we don’t want to know.) and serve as black and white b-roll.

3. Virginia Kerr — …who is really really really in to this. If she could just do this for her job, we’re pretty sure she would. Actually, she kinda does do this for her job, it’s just the background music is turned up and she gets to wear a silver wig this time.

4. The evening news anchors — They could not want to be less involved in this. Three of them just did a little “smile and wink” appearance to be good sports (Connors, Ehrhardt, and Savard), but the leader of the “get away from me, don’t you know I’m on the local evening news!” Patrol was Jasmine Huda, who couldn’t even put the phone down to deliver her best “leave me alone” smile and wave.

Who would have thought Fox2 would be bad at Twitter? Fox 2, KTVI, is/was the home of the famed “Web Center”, but they screw up headline tweets like nobody’s business. You may think Tweeting out new headlines with a link to the story sounds simple to do manually, or even something one could automate very easily, but here we are with mangled headline tweets such as:

Craig Cornett Died

Craig Cornett, the former morning show host on St. Louis’s 93.7 The Bull who disappeared from the public eye after being let go from the station and getting in to trouble with the law early last year, was found dead Tuesday in his Jonesboro, Arkansas home.

Police say Cornett was found sitting upright in a chair. His ex-wife said she thought he was asleep, but when she tried to wake him she noticed he was cold to the touch, he was not breathing, and his feet were purple. She said she noticed his eyes and neck were swollen and he was stiff.

KSDK’s Julie Tristan Got Some Attention For Her David Freese “Interview”

Julie Tristan, of KSDK and previously of 101 The River fame, got a little attention over the weekend after sports blog Deadspin took shots at her David Freese interview. Essentially, Deadspin used the piece in which Tristan rides Six Flags’ “Mr. Freeze” ride with the Cardinal third baseman and playfully hits on him with her friend, as an example of what is wrong with all local new media.

STLToday Facebook Poll Reveals the NFL Draft Makes Your Dick Hurt

According to the source, it didn’t stay up for long, but still interesting to know that while the majority of the St. Louis sports faithful agree with the Rams’ draft strategy, others wanted a better wide receiver, or it just all simply made their dick hurt.

Factor in failures like this and their constant use of pop up ads, and maybe it makes more sense to just have the Post Dispatch stick to writing stuff on dead trees.

JC Corcoran Fired, Trish Gazall Quits (and Returns to) KTRS

Belleville police are working through the details of a bizarre situation when two young guys pulled off the road to a gas station because a car was following them and driving erratically. They feared for their safety and possibly rightly so, as shortly after they pulled over the 38 year old following them, got out of his car, reached in their car to grab them. Someone Put a One Million Dollar Bounty Out for Maplewood Cops

A Craigslist ad appeared last week putting a 1 Million dollar bounty out for every Maplewood cop’s head, and 2 Million for the head of a specific detective. It read “Wanted dead, all the maplewood city police officers, paying one million per head. two million for detective [redacted]”

The ad, which was obviously an empty threat as they gave no address for head sending, was quickly removed and the Maplewood police are working with Craigslist to track down the poster.

If you’ve never heard of Joe Sports Fan, here’s all you need to know: Occasionally we can’t help ourselves, but we try very hard to not cover sports stories because the guys over there have St. Louis sports covered. Former Ram and current 101 ESPN host D’Marco Farr went to dinner last night while in Dallas for the SuperBowl and he had to pee really really really bad.

He parked in a lot to run inside and…well…it turned out to be a valet lot, so that made the little valet guy angry. Cue TMZ’s cameras!

This morning we heard that Bob Stelton stood up for Farr saying that he offered to pay, which honestly seems fair, but after watching the tape, maybe he could have offered to pay a little more nicely. After “Jesus F*cking Christ!” and “Do you need a tip?! I’ll give you a f*cking tip!” it may have turned in to a spite situation.

In case you forgot the way to get help via the phone that most of you grew up ingrained in your minds, Mayor Slay is here to help with a perfectly timed tweet reminding you all about 911 for all your Snowpocalypse related emergencies.

Where the hell was this kind of helpful tidbit in November when the city seems to be in the midst of a race against 2009’s death toll? Oh well…ok, so if you report those kind of emergencies it makes us look bad (by “bad” we mean “worst than Detroit”) so just try to use 911 for weather stuff and call…um…912 we guess…for all your “I’m got lost going to Crown Candy and people keep shooting at me” kinda emergencies. Also, if you were to then feel yourself dying, could you try to take a taxi out to St. Charles County? The city will reimburse you and really appreciate it.

A state of emergency was declared on New Years Eve by Missouri Governor Jay Nixon after a strong storm rushed across center and eastern Missouri, taking apart chunks of South St. Louis County and killing one person in Rolla. Afterward, emergency crews cleaned up the mess, a few people found new shelter for the night and the local news networks patted themselves on the back and found ways to stay on the air as long as possible. Hours later the little weather map in the corner had long since lost its bright red and yellow colors, but they pressed on, telling everyone how important going to the basement was while showing the same clip of firefighters carrying an old lady over and over again. Also did you know a fence got knocked over? Well. You missed it buddy. Crazy stuff. Oh and you’ve probably never seen a fire truck, but we have! They showed us like 20. News like this is really important.

Interesting stuff about a case that so far, has netted very little int the way of details aside from a 911 tape that was as boring as they come despite all the media outlets trying to make it interesting. Oh god! The guy said “It’s dark in here!” No way! Someone must have been trying to hide the body by…turning out the lights?! If you have nothing interesting to report, just say “Nothing yet but we’re looking.” or just don’t say anything at all.

Jud Birza’s Excellent Survivor Adventure

Jud Birza, just off his exciting Survivor win, is back in town for the holidays this week and while working out at a local YMCA, Birza gave KMOV some of his time for an interview with the St. Louis’ newest “million dollar man”.

The interview is great, but not in the way KMOV or Jud would have hoped. You should really watch it. Don’t watch the whole thing though, it’s brutal. If only there was a way for you to just watch the funny parts all edited together…duh dude! That’s what we’re here for!

St. Louis sports radio’s “Rush Limbaugh” position is filled by one Kevin Slaten. He panders to the lowest, hoosier-iest people in the market, always upset about whoever it’s shocking to be upset about because he isn’t “controlled” by whomever he’s mad at, telling everyone that doesn’t call in to tell him how great he is that they’re morons. It’s an angle that really doesn’t make a whole lot of sense for a sports show and that’s probably why no one listens to him as the ratings show.

Stop Putting the Arch in Your Logo

One of the most frequent questions we are asked is: “Why doesn’t your site name have anything to do with St. Louis?” to which we always reply “It doesn’t need to. If the site does well, the name won’t matter and it will just seem St. Louis-y regardless. Having to put “STL” or “river” in every damn thing created around here is lame and lazy.

That question is actually #2 to one other question though: “Why don’t you have the Arch on your site anywhere?” which is interesting really since that’s the exact opposite question we have for nearly every business or organization in St. Louis: Why the hell do you think you need to put the Arch in all your logos?! Yes, we get it that the Arch is St. Louis’ nationally recognized symbol, and because of that, it makes sense for tourism logo’s to include the arch visual…it still makes no sense as to why anything else has the arch in it. Quite simply, the Arch doesn’t really mean a lot to actual St. Louisans. How many of you have actually been up in the Arch? We bet fewer than you might think. Flat out, the Arch is not something the average St. Louisan thinks about at all. Hell, only a small fraction of the St. Louis area can even see the arch and a regular basis and even city dwellers don’t give a crap.

Virginia Kerr to Get Bumped to “Great Day” by Her Brunette Clone

Virginia Kerr, St. Louis’ news sweetheart, after famously tweeting about her sniz during labor, has been on maternity leave from her morning anchor post at KMOV who quickly found a brunette version of Kerr to fill the spot while she’s gone, one Claire Kellett. We have no idea how Claire is doing in her fill-in duties because we don’t get up that early and prefer to get our news from every other place ever, but apparently she’s doing just fine because now Brunette Virginia is in and Blonde Virginia is out.

At this point, we’re quite sure that you know all about the Giants and Vikings NFL adventure: The Giants tried to get to Minnesota, but got stranded in Kansas City (sucks for them), causing Sunday’s game to be played on Monday…and then…this shit happened.

…which moved the game to Detroit. You also know that the Vikings got destroyed and people talked about Brett Favre the whole time.

What you might now have known is that one mayor offered to have the game played at his local stadium instead of Detroit. Sure his stadium is much farther than Detroit’s proximity to the original game, in fact the teams would have to pass up at least 4 other perfectly good stadiums on the way to his. Also his stadium is pretty crappy, not tattered roof with piles of snow crappy, but close. What mayor would make himself look like a complete dumbass by not only officially offering his stadium but then following that up with telling everyone that he did it, sparing himself just the quiet embarassment of having NFL officials laughing at him?

If St. Louisans start to get the feeling that KSDK (NBC affiliate, Channel 5) only serves up national TV just so they can build up confindence that sitcoms and sporting events will air in St. Louis so they can later arbitrarily remove it, pooping all over your TV watching plans to make you hate life we wouldn’t blame you. The last few years KSDK has become infamous for ruining people’s Sunday afternoon or evenings by yanking things like NBC Sports coverage or popular sitcoms in lieu of stupid local programming that they needed to sell ads on to make budget.

According to Deb Peterson of STLToday.com, Tim McKernan, who looks like a thumb if he tilts his head a certain way (see right), and of InsideSTL and 590AM KFNS (and previously 1380AM KSLG and before that, KFNS again) is getting married to his girlfriend of two-ish years.

McKernan said today that he got down on bended knee while the couple watched a perfect sunset on a beach in Sanibel. “That’s how it went down,” he added. Being a real gentleman, McKernan had already asked Mom and Dad Benassi (Susan and Terry) for a thumbs-up on his plan to propose.

Governor Nixon Went Hunting and Gave His Kill to Homeless People

Governor Jay Nixon took down a big kill during his latest hunting excursion and in a freaking press release, has announced that he is donating the meat to the homeless. No word yet if the Governor plans on doing a press release if he gives a quarter to a bum at the Metrolink station.

Governor Nixon gave his kill to Share the Harvest, a program that allows hunters to donate their kills to be processed and then disbursed to local food banks and shelters. So far over 2 million pounds of meat have been donated to the program.

We have a secret to divulge…we monitor all of your “tweets.” Yes, all of them. Most are fine, a few are great, and a bunch are so horrible that it makes us want to kick and old lady down the stairs and then pee on her. True story, and we want to remind you that feelings can’t be wrong.

Let’s just get right down to it: You’ve seriously got to stop tweeting song lyrics. Stop it. Stop it right now. It doesn’t make you deep, and frankly it doesn’t even really help the artist themselves seem deep. Right now, assuming you do this, and you know if you do, you’re saying “Whatever. That band I like has totally amazing lyrics that have gotten me through some tough times! They are poets man!” We aren’t sure how to break this to you, but writing stuff that sounds deep isn’t tough and lots of bands that are universally recognized as crap have done it plenty of times. He apparently had named the little red cardinal “Albert”…not sure why. Don’t see any connection there. If he was making a joke, he should really come off his high horse and do something more relatable, because who knows what he was referring to. Maybe John will explain the obscure reference needed to understand why naming a cardinal “Albert” would be funny. Naming it “Fart”or “Boob” would have been far more universally hilarious.

JC Corcoran Joins KTRS, Bumps Charles Jaco

KTRS, in the midst of a major overhaul after losing the Cardinals, has hired Corcoran to fill the mid-day 10a-1p slot. John Brown‘s show the Mindset (which we were a guest on earlier this year) has been moved back to a 1p – 3p slot.

I-70 Accident Triggers Twitter’s Shark Jumping Event

Yesterday at the downtown lanes of I-70 a tractor-trailer, a flat bed truck carrying concrete sewer linings and three other cars came together is in the eastbound lanes. The cause was later found to be a driver that stopped in the road to pick up road dibris, causing a slowdown and then the pileup which left the highway closed until about 2pm.

Because of its downtown location, the accident could be seen from many office buildings including that of Jason Wagner, Twitter user @threefourteen. An accident? To the Social Media Mobile!

KLOU to Add Steph Duran For Afternoon Drive

103.3 KLOU is making the move back to more local on-air talent during the day after only having a local morning show, a slot recently vacated by Julie Buck. Which means there is actually a radio station looking for on-air talent, which is about as rare these days as a Cardinals victory or a leprechaun riding a unicorn that poops Cinnamon Toast Crunch. The sound you’re hearing is the thunder of out of work radio people running towards KLOU. The sound you aren’t hearing is anyone other than radio professionals giving a damn.

The first one in the gate at the new KLOU schedule? We hear it’s y98 and 101.1 Movin’ alum Steph Duran. Who is Steph Duran? …she was on the morning show for Movin’, everyone’s favorite…eh…ok, well there was Y98! Lots of people know her from Y98! No? Anyone that spends a lot of time in doctor’s waiting rooms at least…cancer patients and the like…alright, in all honesty if you are alive today you probably aren’t familiar with Duran, and if you do know her, then congrats on beating cancer! Of course, it’s a long shot, but you could be one of the 100 people in the “Please Bring Steph Duran back to St. Louis Radio!” club on Facebook. Anyway, our source says Duran has won the afternoon shift on 103.3 and with those 100 people on her side she should easily be the most popular radio show in St. Louis by about 37 people.

Of course that KLOU morning shift is still out there, but those of you on the beach should count on just staying there. We hear that the job is all but locked up. We don’t have firm enough sources to say a name right now, but after bringing Steph Duran in, they are set on a man for the morning show and seem to have one in their sights.

Post Dispatch to Raise Subscription Rates Soon

We hear the Post Dispatch is readying a price hike in its print subscription, which is both unsurprising and will be sure to annoy the Post’s subscribers who more than likely won’t understand the premium printing actual paper copies has now become.

Though we don’t know the specific figures being bounced around, the current subscription price for a full week’s paper (including the Sunday issue) is just under $18 a month.

Late Friday afternoon, after exchanging emails with an assignment editor, KSDK reporter Ashley Yarchin came to Punching Kitty headquarters to do a story about our recent post “Craigslist: Anyone Seen the Cardinals Team We Had in April?” and in turn, Punching Kitty the blog.

Once setting up all the one-man-show reporter gear in our office we talked on camera about when I started Punching Kitty, what its about, then specifically about the Craigslist post followed by a dramatic reading of my posting. I mentioned the name of the site several times, we positioned shots so that the logo and name were on screen and when she left I gave her a sticker. Personally we liked the charm of the odd little building KDHX’s radio operation has been housed in, but they sure didn’t. A big grant and plans for a fund raiser later and they are moving north up Grand to the Grand Center.

A long-time volunteer and patron made the anonymous gift in honor of the station’s late manager Larry Weir, who passed away in January,said station spokeswoman Birgit Spears.

Riverfront Times Takes Down BestofStLouis.com

The site BestofStLouis.com is gone. There isn’t even a traditional “It’s over” page…it’s just gone. The domain now goes to an all-ad page.

What happened? Lawyers and copyright law happened, and the heat came from the Riverfront Times.

As we’re sure you’re aware, each year the Riverfront Times puts out its “Best of St. Louis” issue and because of that believes it holds the rights to the term “Best of St. Louis”. That seems week to us that someone can own something as generic as that, but we aren’t lawyers and the Riverfront Times’ parent company Village Voice Media didn’t bother to call and ask our opinion, so they went ahead and sent one of those oh-so-fun legal notices to the two guys that ran BestofStLouis.com. They were “graciously” given until September 1st to take their site down.

Bryan Burwell Out at 101ESPN?

Though the usually prompt expunging of a jettisoned host from a radio website still hasn’t happened as of this writing, Dan Ceasar of STLToday.com is reporting that his fellow columnist Bryan Burwell has been yanked from his own show on the FM sport talk station, 101 ESPN.

Sources said the move was ratings-related and not tied to any other issue, and that Burwell still could be involved in Rams game day programming. It is not known who – or if anyone – will replace Burwell alongside Bob Stelton in the 9-11 a.m weekday slot.

Friday afternoon the word started trickling out that local group, Grand Slam Sports’ bid to buy the “other” sports talk radio station in town, KFNS (590 AM), became official. Not only that, Grand Slam Sports also announced they had purchased the local sports blog JoeSportsFanSTL.com. Their bid to buy the other other sports talk station you haven’t heard of KSLG (1380 AM) is still in the works.

Grand Slam Sports, which consists of a group of local investors, bought KFNS from Big League Broadcasting for $1.4 million.

KSDK Exposes Minor’s Name in the Parkway Central Facebook Drama

KSDK made one hell of a production effort for one of their lovely little in-house stand-ups during a recent local news broadcast about the recent might-have-happened-but-who-knows school “shooting” incident involving Parkway Central at the little moron’s Facebook page. They even went to the trouble of bringing up that very Facebook profile in question, blowing it up on the large video monitor beside the reporter.

One thing though: He’s an uncharged minor. You aren’t supposed to be blasting his name everywhere!

It’s cool though, they thought about that little fact…about 5 seconds too late.

Reporter: [Points to screen left of camera] Now this is the profile page in question.

Reporter: …actually, lets come back to that because…uh…come back to me.

We aren’t sure of the ramifications for their quick legal blunder, but even it amounts to nothing, this is still pretty bad. We also still can’t figure out why they would put the profile up on the big screen if they knew they shouldn’t be showing it. In our mind, everything was cool until the minute they showed that boy’s name and some old guy in the back that’s worked there for years and hasn’t talked in months yelled out “You can’t do that! It’s agains the law!” Old guys always know the law better than anyone. Probably why the always vote and read the news and stuff. We don’t have time for that crap because of all the loud music we listen to while we horseplay.

According to a recent study by Punching Kitty.com, St. Louis has come out on top, over all the major US metro areas, as the best city for…um…this crazy thing…it’s not really important.

Initial speculation is that the Post Dispatch celebrated the internal holiday of “Pretend Any of This Matters” Day…or just needed to fill a little space on page 14 between the first ad and the other four.

Most noticeable among those is the switch at City Hall where education reporter David Hunn will step in forJake Wagman who’s covered St. Louis politics for much of the past decade.

How did this event slip by us? You would have thought with all the media coverage it got there’s no way we could have possibly…oh that’s right the media didn’t cover this at all.

The other day we swear one of the new stations thought they were covering a protest on the steps of City Hall, but it turns out to be 3 homeless guys sleeping and one taking a crap in the corner. The Morning After Moves to KFNS

When there’s smoke there’s fire, and we have been swamped with both anonymous tips and confirmations from reliable sources all saying that 1380’s popular morning show The Morning After will be moving to competing AM sports talk venue KFNS as with in the next 30-45 days.

The morning show, staffed by front man Tim McKernan, Jim Hayes and Doug Vaughn has been KSLG 1380AM’s only decent property for some time now, with the rest of their day-part covered by bottom feeding shows and closing out with St. Louis’ own Glenn Beck of sports, Kevin Slaten who has had a history of good ratings but has slid dramatically in the last few rating periods to a new low recently. Though The Morning After gave 1380 its only show worth a damn, that show brought with it many of the day parts that have failed so mightily recently as 1380 made a deal with McKernan, owner of the local sports and semi-attractive girls’ tits-focused website InsideSTL, to purchase the morning hours until midday. The experiment, though cheap to run for 1380, has thus far been a failure.

St. Louis’ newest station 100.3 The Sound, owned by ClearChannel might be gone before it ever really got started according to a source of STLMedia.net:

Clear Channel is very close to selling/donating 100.3 to one of the groups that tried to stop the KFUO transfer. Its a double win for Clear Channel, triple if you consider that The Sound is a complete failure. All of this is being done with San Antonio because of the complex nature of the deal, but it could be done by July 4th.

Hmm. Well the site is still up, and according to the St. Louis Beacon, the Globe Democrat has laid off three reporters and is “refocusing” on only certain sections of news. Namely sports and local politics.

Koster met with representatives from craigslist exactly a year ago, demanding the company take action to eliminate advertisements for prostitution and other illegal activities on its site. Nine days after the meeting, craigslist announced major changes to its site, including eliminating the “erotic services” section and manually screening for nude photos and illegal activities such as prostitution.

Already scraped from the website, Jill Devine, already a veteran of the St. Louis radio wars, is out at ClearChannel’s 93.7 the Bull. Devine has been at the Bull since leaving Bonneville’s 101.1 Movin, which soon after turned to 101 ESPN. Devine pitched in on the Bull’s morning show and then moved to mid-days and then back to mornings.

No details as of yet, but it’s not much of a guess to postulate that ClearChannel is continuing to hemorrhage money like most other radio outlets. Their newest station, 100.3 The Sound has, thus far, only hired one jock for the station and we hear he isn’t even located in the St. Louis area, but actually records his work out of town to be played in the St. Louis market.

St. Louis Waits for the iPad

I’ve never been to a mall this early before in my life.

It’s 6:45am and I’m walking in to the West County Mall with a b-line for the Apple store. The glass front of the Apple store is shrouded in darkness with black curtains covering the front of the store while I can only assume the little Apple elves are scurrying around sprinkling the last bits of magic dust on the iPads. I will be only the third person in the “reservation” line, but counting the other line of unwashed “no reservation” people I’m probably closer to the 30 or 40th person total. The guys ahead of me are claiming they were in line at 11pm last night, which at the time I found hard to believe. Later on I found that the two of them and their dog slept in a car parked in the mall lot and walked in when the mall opened at 5am. An hour later I find out that one of the two guys ahead of me is just along for the ride, making me the second iPad purchaser in line. So close to #1! I don’t feel bad being bested by the guy though, he has waited in line for the iPhone and Xbox 360 previously. He’s a pro.

As a congratulatory note, Punching Kitty has paid for a coffin full of flowers and candy to be delivered to the Senator’s home later today. Dick Ford and John Auble have been around the St. Louis news scene for a long time now. Long enough to have a clip surface where together they interview Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons from KISS even before they would allow anyone to seen them sans makeup.

Stanley and Simmons did the whole interview with their backs to the camera with only a pair of shades embedded in to the mane of Simmon’s hair to differentiate himself.

Normally this would be a pretty un-stimulating TV interview. Good think Ford and Auble brought the audience in on the action…

Um, guys? KISS really isn’t in that TV. You don’t have to look at the TV in some vein attempt at eye contact.

According to our sources the St. Louis Cardinals have had internal discussions about trading injured so-so shortstop Brendan Ryan to the New York Yankees for All-Star third baseman Alex Rodriguez.

It is not clear whether the Cardinals have brought this idea to the attention of the Yankees. There are seriously loads of problems with this, so lets toss out some easy ones like oh the fact that internet might be a way better place for this kinda crap, and start with a simple one: Are you freakin’ serious with the size of this thing?! And then on top of that, you are only showing 2 schools! Jesus, you would think you could squeeze in a few more schools. Another thing: you really don’t have to say “closed” on each one. We know. That’s why there are on the list. It’s a “School Closings List”. Yeah, yeah, there are a few schools that just start later, but couldn’t those just go on at the end of the list or with an asterisk or something? 5 schools really shouldn’t mean the whole list needs “Closed” next to everything.

News Chopper 5 Has Been Grounded

More cost-cutting measures continue to be created to keep our struggling local news operations afloat. One of the more recent ones is KSDK, channel 5’s move to dismantle their news helicopter.

From the rumor mill over on STLMedia.net:

As of February 1st KSDK no longer has a news helicopter. The camera has been removed from chopper 5. In a cost cutting move KSDK is negotiating with KMOV for a “shared use” of aerial footage, but has yet to sign an agreement. Just another sign of the need to save money.

According to the St. Louis Business Journal, Fox 2 has decided to send a report to Haiti…because apparently there isn’t a single stock photo or video of Haiti around anywhere! Sadly, its not Rich Gould.

Our source in the Post Dispatch tells us that the latest of the series of cost cutting measures is that all reporters, and even a few other positions, are losing their company paid cell phones. To be fair, our source did say that they will be reimbursing the staff for personal phone use, but in something that’s just too good to make up, the paper did suggest that the staff add as many business numbers to their “calling circles”.

When is Too Early For Christmas Music?

Changes are also being made to the station’s late afternoon show. Long-time station personalities Katy Kruze and Carl “the Intern” Middleman have been let go.

NEWS IS NEWS: KSDK (Channel 5) anchor/producer Art Holliday is known around the dial for his affable good nature. But (as Congressional candidate Ed Martin might say) , even Atlas has to shrug. Holliday was missing from the station’s downtown studio Thursday, sent out by his bosses to cool down following a newsroom tirade earlier in the week. Holliday was loudly upset after the station aired a story about a memorial service for St. Louis police officer Julius Moore. According to Channel 5’s story, the young officer and father of three was shot and killed. According to every other news outlet (and the Police Department), he died of injuries sustained in an auto accident en route to assist a fellow Third District officer. Even though they are both owned by Bonneville, on-air folks at WIL make much more money than those at #1 WARH.

Maybe AFTRA affiliation is good for something, but you can bet there’s some chafing at WARH.

So maybe this is surprising to some people, it wasn’t here. Yes, its true our fair editor has a connection to radio parent company Bonneville as he was previously an employee, but that doesn’t matter. It doesn’t take much thought to figure out that 92.3 WIL is a personality driven station, just look at the marketing. 106.5 the Arch however is just the opposite. Sure they have great talent on there, but its not the focus, the music is. The Arch didn’t get to #1 by pimping Van and Rick or Michelle Steele, they did it by creating a station you turn on when you get to your office and leave it on all day. It’s background music.

The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod will sell its 61-year-old classical music station, KFUO-99.1 FM, to Gateway Creative Broadcasting, the LCMS and Gateway announced today, for $18 million plus $8 million in interest over a 10-year term.

According to The Riverfront Times [Editor’s Note: Who we are mad at them right now! Boo!] St. Louis’ only Gay/Lesbian/Transgender newspaper is shutting its doors until 2010.

Voice publisher and owner, Pam Schneider, tells Daily RFT that she decided to shutdown the paper for the rest of the year to concentrate on a redesign of the publication.

“It just made sense to take the time and money we need to focus on coming out in 2010 the way we want,” she says.

Missouri has recorded its second swine flu death, and the first in the western part of the state.

State health officials say a 24-year-old Independence woman died Wednesday night, several days after she was hospitalized with symptoms including diarrhea, coughing and extreme fatigue. Her name was not released.

Look, KSDK, I don’t know how to tell you this…geez…um, we don’t care about Swine Flu any more. We’ve moved on to more important issues like Kanye West, so you should move on too. Sure its kinda interesting that the Swine Flu symptoms seem to be exactly like what happens after caving and eating at Taco Bell, but do we really need to count each one?

If you were wondering why the Rants and Raves section on the St. Louis corner of popular classifieds site Craigslist is filled with postings like: “Why do guys always look at by boobs”, “I Have An Assgasm When I Shove Cake Up My Ass” and “Posh and Donkey’s” its all cakelady’s fault!

Rants and raves used to be a halfway intelligent forum. Not anymore. Now all I see are racist rants (way to make St. Louis look even more backwoods) and that stupid fucking cakelady (whoever the hell he or she might be). Seriously, does this person have a life? His/her postings make me want to puke, and not just because of the picture. I want to contact the owners of Craigslist and get this waste of oxygen banned from the site. Free speech does have a downside, and cakelady is a perfect example.

Loesch continues her schtick, patented by others before her, of smiling and not looking like a old bald rich white guy and then firing back with “well maybe they had a conceal and carry license? …at least he didn’t shoot anyone with it!” Although Loesch claims that there were scary guys looking to kick her ass, and frankly we don’t doubt that. If we had to bet though, we’d put money on people not wanting to kick her ass over her health care views, but rather because they had to work with her in planning last year’s Interactive Festival in the Loop.

The Buck’s Roof Roof Roof is on Fire!

A fire ravaged the house of Carole Buck, wife of the late Cardinals broadcaster Jack Buck, and mother to current broadcaster Joe Buck yesterday in Ladue. Though the cause is not known at this time, they do know that many of the family’s baseball collectables were damaged.

The fire clearly did a lot of damage as you can see from the photo above, but its confusing thing is that it was only rated as a two-alarm fire. We’ve had chili hotter than that! Maybe it was a crapy house.

Update: FourSquare Coming to St. Louis This Fall?

In an update to our previous Foursquare post, friend-of-the-site Bill Streeter at the Riverfront Times actually got Foursquare to answer an email [Editor’s Note: Well la-de-da!].

So I sent Foursquare co-founder Dennis Crowley an email and asked him when they planned on launching in St. Louis. He emailed me back almost immediately. He said that they were just a two man operation that was a little overwhelmed by the sudden popularity to Foursquare and they were scrambling to hire help to expand. He said that ideally they would like to launch in St. Louis in time for the start of the school year, but it seems more realistic that it won’t happen until the end of October or maybe later.

For those that didn’t/can’t watch the video, here’s what the dude sent in:

I count 50-60% of that list as acceptable. The rest are boring or lame. The Museum of Transportation? Thats how I start off a wild trip to St. Louis! Woooo! Also, while we agree on principle with the “Forest Park” item, dropping all that in there as one item is pretty lame. Makes me think this guy doesn’t even live in the city and is just putting it on there because he’s heard the name a few times. Maybe it was a childhood reared on Mr. Rogers watching him show me how crayons are made, but I love seeing factory tours. In that vein we found a clip from KETC, channel 9, where they toured the St. Louis Tums factory! …its a little boring and “PBSy” in the beginning, but once the actual factory tour starts its pretty cool.

Unless its just me that gets geeked up about stuff like this…if thats the case then we are showing this because its ironic lame, like all those “old” tshirts they sell at Wal-Mart, and proving that we are straight punk.

Did Charles Jaco Fake a Desert Storm CNN Report?

Found on YouTube, this clip from a 1991 CNN broadcast, with added subtitles, claims that CNN and then reporter, now Fox 2 KTVI reporter and 550AM host, Charles Jaco fake a remote, leading people to believe that they were in some hostile area rather than a soundstage of sorts.

After watching the video, I have to lean towards agreeing this this guy, but really who knows, and more importantly, no one does or should care, but the video is pretty damn funny. This isn’t just some Daily Show-esque “remote,” they have props (a gas mask and helmet from the set of MASH make an appearance), Jaco is rocking a pretty awesome, yet understated mustache, and there is a montage at the end of behind the scenes-type clips that the author uses as further evidence.

We also get this “warning” at the end for us sheeple to wake up! We’ll pass on your warning there Neo, but thanks for the funny video.

Extension Be Dammed: KDNL To Drop Analog TV Signal Today

We hear that despite the extension recently passed into law that now makes the Digital TV transition cut off June 12th, KDNL will make the “switch” and cut off their analog TV signal today, the original DTV cut-off date.

There is word that there has been a complete hiring freeze at Simmons owned stations (thats 1380AM and 1490AM here in St. Louis) because of a possible up coming sale of all properties in Texas and Missouri.

Its no secret 1380 is in serious trouble after the recent firings that left only one person on the business side for the entire station, but we aren’t sure about the heresy of a full station sale. We tend to think there would be more word out if something like that was really this close to happening, and of course there is the question of “Who the hell would buy 1380?” still hanging out there.

We have just received word that Brian McKenna, formally of KFNS 590 is jumping from one sinking ship to another as he will be starting as cohost of the Bernie Miklasz Show (2p-6p) as soon as tomorrow (Feb 9th).

We know that Bernie has had his share of cohosts since Randy Karraker was let go due to budget constraints (and later landed with the new 101 ESPN). Nearly all the cohosts Bernie has been with have been horrible (Jay Randolph jr and Joe Zydlo being some of the most offensive) so maybe this is a move by 1380 to solidify up that show…or with all the movement between these two stations lately the was “the talking head to be named later” in the “Fox Hole” trade.

USA Today reported yesterday that Amtrak is reporting that their trains going between St. Louis and Kansas City are 96% on time. Seriously.

This is a fucking joke right? Who could possible give a shit about this?! Maybe the article will tell me…

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Amtrak trains traveling between Kansas City and St. Louis turned in a stellar on-time rate for January.

The Missouri Department of Transportation said Tuesday that the trains were on schedule 96% of the time. MoDOT credits better dispatching by Union Pacific and $400 million in track repairs that allowed the trains to move faster.

In a recent post about the Post Dispatch and their financial troubles, I put a call out for anyone that works there to tell us what its like. That call was answered by a commenter and after reading it, I felt it needed the attention a full post brings. The question posed was “What’s the vibe like there?”

The vibe is not knowing…a numbness that has you just fulfill your duties and go home. It used to be a vibrant place when I first got there, but now there’s alot of empty space, the people who would stop by and say hi don’t have the time to anymore, and everything changes some more in an almost predictable pattern. You can hear it in voices, see it in eyes, and every meeting or email from certain people makes your heart jump into your throat and stay there until your survival is assured.

I just read the article announcing this list and yes, I was proud that my city was listed in the top 25. But you know what my knee jerk reaction was? “Really? That doesn’t seem right!” I mean, come on. We’re the city that gave the world Budweiser… and John Goodman. Our city newscasters count Jeff Bernthal and Rich Gould among their number. Aren’t we supposed to be corn-fed, happy and… FAT? I guess not. I used to walk around Saint Louis, comforted in the fact that I blended in with the apple-cheeked, pillowy Midwestern citizenry. Ryan Huff, a Production Director and Producer for all sports-talk station KFNS (590 AM) was arrested in Arnold and charges were filed that included raping underage girls.

Apparently Huff met the girls on “an internet chatroom,” which could mean anything since I’m guessing the reporter on the KMOV video I watched doesn’t know the difference between this very site and and actual “internet chatroom.” After the meeting online, the two went to the movies, on a “date,” and then back to a house where they were joined by another 13 year old girl. Abandoning the fairly recent Fox-wide “MyFox[insert city abbreviation].com” push already is a bit of a mystery to most, but the issue is fairly clear after a quick twitter search:

According to STLMedia.net, heads might be rolling at KSDK after Gannett tried and failed to force a week long, un-paid, vacation for its employees. The word is, the lay offs could come as soon as next week.

If “famous” heads are getting lopped off from media companies, couldn’t we at least turn this in to some fun for someone? What if KSDK said, Survivor style, that the following people were up for “elimination” and then we get the vote to see who gets the axe?!

So I guess Elizabeth Alexander’s inaugural poem has been getting panned by people in poetry circles. For instance, in an article on guardian.co.uk, Carol Rumens said that “Elizabeth Alexander’s praise poem was way too prosy” You bitch! Eh…I guess…is that what the poetry circle calls getting “panned,” or being, as STLToday.com called it, “harsh?”

I’ve noticed for a while now that the websites of alt weekly newspapers – like the Village Voice, and the Riverfront Times here in St. Louis – will run these photo galleries where they send someone out to the club with a camera to get pictures of broads with their cans hanging out of their shirts, and I’ve heard that these are often the most popular features on those sites. Washed-up kids science show host and recurring guest “star” on CBS’ drama Numb3rs Bill Nye is coming to speak at St. Louis University at the Busch Student Center building on February 16th.

The topic of his talk will be “More with Less: How Saint Louis University Students are Going to Change the World.” See the brilliance of it is putting the school he happens to be at is right in the title of the speech! This can’t fail. On a related note, I’ve heard from several rock groups that St. Louis is “the rockin’-est city in the world!”
