PUNCHING KITTY: 2009 - 2013

Punching Kitty was a writing project for the city of St. Louis to have a little fun and try to get everyone to stop taking themselves so seriously…and hopefully highlight some critical issues along the way. Not everyone liked it (it turns out people don’t love being made fun of) but we converted a lot of people and I take pride that the site was truly well read. From the local media, to area police departments, Punching Kitty truly became a source for news and entertainment for St. Louis.

We had a lot of fun, but all good things need an ending and ours was on March 13th, 2013. When we closed up shop the news made local radio, TV, and even the front page of STLToday (The St. Louis Post Dispatch’s website) where we were the top story over a new pope being named. Wild stuff.

While we will no longer actively write, the site will stay up as an archive for St. Louis.

A Mass Exodus is Brewing at KSDK

angry_woman_1First Deanne Lane, then Cordell Whitlock, who’s next to leave local NBC affiliate KSDK?  Apparently it could be anyone because our source says they are all pretty pissed:

****…morale is way down there because of forced pay cuts everyone had to take last year.  That’s why you’ve seen several resignations there in the last year and you’ll likely see a few more.

This recent reports matches what much of what me and others have heard for a while now:  No one is happy there.  We aren’t just talking about “I work in a dying media that is run by morons” pissed off, this is really pissed off.

Is This the Final Goodbye From The Bull’s Craig Cornett?

craig cornettCraig Cornett managed to barely survive the swing of the Radio Grim Reaper’s scythe the last time the bell tolled at ClearChannel, but his time may have finally come.

Our sources say he posted this on his Facebook profile last night:

Hey everyone… I wish I could explain everything, but just hang in there and someday soon… uh, um, ahh… I think I’ve said too much. As MacArthur said “I shall return!” Wait… the Filipino people waited over 2 years. I would never do that to you. Think of me more like Tupac. A hail of bullets and even death will not be enough to shut me up! I will be posting as often as possible. God Bless You All

Wait You Can’t Pay For Your Lemonade With Penis?

swank, rodneyMy man on the right there is about as sick as he is stupid.

You see ole Rodney Swank was driving his truck down the road in his home town of O’Fallon MO on Octobor 4th of last year, when he saw a lemonade stand being run by 8 or 9, I’m assuming adorable, little girls.  Swank then decided it would be a good idea to pull over and expose himself to the young entrepreneurs.  Shockingly the girls ran away.

stlouisticketingAccording to USAToday, a new interactive art exhibit is being installed in to Lambert Airport.

The feature is called Windows on St. Louis. It’s a glass-walled gallery where six cultural attractions have filled the windows with art and memorabilia.

Update: FourSquare Coming to St. Louis This Fall?

foursquareIn an update to our previous Foursquare post, friend-of-the-site Bill Streeter at the Riverfront Times actually got Foursquare to answer an email [Editor’s Note: Well la-de-da!].

So I sent Foursquare co-founder Dennis Crowley an email and asked him when they planned on launching in St. Louis. He emailed me back almost immediately. He said that they were just a two man operation that was a little overwhelmed by the sudden popularity to Foursquare and they were scrambling to hire help to expand. He said that ideally they would like to launch in St. Louis in time for the start of the school year, but it seems more realistic that it won’t happen until the end of October or maybe later.

Dude Works for McDonald’s for 20 Years and Gets a Dumb Cake

mcdonalds-logoGary Hemminghaus, 40 a year old who suffers from Down syndrom, has worked at a Hazelwood McDonalds for 20 years.  20 years.  A McDonald’s.  20 years.  Yeah, Down syndrom, but still.  2o years!

From the Post Dispatch:

“Gary makes work fun,” said his boss, Sadie Travis. “He gets along with everyone, and his attitude really picks you up.”

Hemminghaus has Down syndrome, and when he was hired, his job trainer told him he would be a productive worker if he could prepare just one sandwich. Instead he learned how to make all the lunch items.

This Top 10 List Seems A Little Lame

Over at the 24/7 live show that is live.pirillo.com, host Chris Pirillo asked his viewers for a list of their favorite tourist attractions in their home town.

Here’s the video:

Here’s the problem:  It’s kind of a lame list.

For those that didn’t/can’t watch the video, here’s what the dude sent in:

  1. The Arch.
  2. City Museum
  3. Cathedral Basilica
  4. Science Center
  5. The Zoo
  6. Botanical Gardens
  7. The A.B. Tour
  8. Forest Park
  9. Museum of Transportation
  10. The Loop

I count 50-60% of that list as acceptable.  The rest are boring or lame.  The Museum of Transportation?  Thats how I start off a wild trip to St. Louis!  Woooo!  Also, while we agree on principle with the “Forest Park” item, dropping all that in there as one item is pretty lame.  Makes me think this guy doesn’t even live in the city and is just putting it on there because he’s heard the name a few times.  However, we agree that The Loop we feel is better served grouped together since, although we love the Loop, not one thing there is much of a stand-alone attraction.

Sara Dayley Might Get Benched at 101 ESPN

sara_dayley_headerThis isn’t something we are happy to report, but we are hearing that Sara Dayley, the morning sports update reporter for the FM Sports station, may be on her way out, with reports varying between her getting let go and her leaving on her own.

There has always been a contingent that wasn’t a fan of her updating skills and still others believe that she was hired based on her looks rather than other, more radio-appropriate. skills.  From what we are hearing those whispers may have finally found the ear of those in charge at 101.  In fact, 101 ESPN has, within the last few days, posted a career opportunity for a “Sports Update Anchor

Local ISP UVerse Blocking Access to 4Chan.org

death-star-attAccording to both a TechCrunch report, and confirmations from local sources, it appears that AT&T’s internet service, dubbed “UVerse” is blocking access to one of the biggest, and craziest internet message boards 4Chan.org (specifically they are blocking access to img.4chan.org, where all the content is held) as of last night.

For those that don’t know, 4chan.org is the home base and originator of many of the web’s favorite memes like LOLCats and the infamous Rick Roll (our favorite meme to come out of 4chan is the lesser know “Zach Braff Quotes“)  4chan.org is also the meeting place for the online mob of Anonymous, who is famously entwined in a battle with the pseudo-religion Scientology.  Other than the 1984-esque insanity of blocking a website, it would be particularly dumb for AT&T to do anything that would incur the wrath of Anonymous.  In fact, it looks like the uprising is already brewing, check this out: twitter.com/4chan4ever
