PUNCHING KITTY: 2009 - 2013

Punching Kitty was a writing project for the city of St. Louis to have a little fun and try to get everyone to stop taking themselves so seriously…and hopefully highlight some critical issues along the way. Not everyone liked it (it turns out people don’t love being made fun of) but we converted a lot of people and I take pride that the site was truly well read. From the local media, to area police departments, Punching Kitty truly became a source for news and entertainment for St. Louis.

We had a lot of fun, but all good things need an ending and ours was on March 13th, 2013. When we closed up shop the news made local radio, TV, and even the front page of STLToday (The St. Louis Post Dispatch’s website) where we were the top story over a new pope being named. Wild stuff.

While we will no longer actively write, the site will stay up as an archive for St. Louis.

St. Louis County to Stall Some Bait Houses Because Criminals Are Stupid

The St. Louis County Council is taking a vote soon to be the first place in the nation to install “bait houses,” because we have lots of empty houses and calling some of them a special names means you can cross them off the total number of empty homes list!

The St. Louis County Police Department proposed the idea to crack down on criminals breaking into vacant foreclosed houses. One of the detectives got the idea from the “bait cars” that are used to track car thieves. Some of the items inside the bait houses would have tracking devices that police will monitor.

Dairy Queen’s Reefer Bash 2: The Electric Boogaloo

Sometimes things are so awesome, you have no choice but to squeeze a sequel out.  Take Legally Blonde, wait no…Teen Wolf!…err…um…Speed!!  Nevermind.  Movies are a bad example, but Dairy Queen’s “Titz n’ Reefer Bash” from a few days back is!

Oh thats right!  Our eagled-eye’d (or horny, pot smoking) reader has spotted a change to the sign!  Note the now added “2” on the left but still the same awesome-adding “69” on the right.

Those Whatever-They-Are Things on 44 Are Coming Down

You know those things on the side of 44 right on the border of St. Louis County?  You know, those things that look like unfinished buildings that were started way before you were born, or some sort of King Kong cage?  Well, apparently they are natural gas storage tanks and they are coming down!

The natural gas storage tanks owned by Laclede Gas were erected in 1925 and 1941, and have been inactive since 1995.  They sit on just under 6-acres of land, which was purchased by a development firm that plans to grade and seed the soon-to-be-vacant property so it looks “nice” while trying to attract a new owner to build on the site.

The Rams Continue the Suckfest

81707287DV023_SANFRANCISCOThe Rams lost, again.  They are now the team with the longest current losing streak since Detroit actually scraped one together against the Redskins.  Its getting pretty nasty over at Rams Park for the new regime and Post Dispatch scribe Bernie Miklasz has the proof on his Twitter feed:

We Want A New Cheesy Cardinals Promo!

The Cardinals are officially in the playoffs again and after running across this promo from 1992 about 100 years of the Cardinals on  YouTube, it got me thinking:  Where are the new cheesy promos?!  I want to see Pujols and Holiday “playing” the trumpet.  I want to see Julio Lugo playing the kettle drums!  …maybe Tony throw down some bad dance moves!  Oh and one quick shot of Dave Duncan just standing there, arms folded, looking pissed.

Out of the Rubble of Jamestown Mall Comes “Lindbergh Place”?

jamestown_mallOn Friday a panel of experts on crappy malls or something recommended that Jamestown Mall should be bulldozed and use the space for a “town center” with retail shops and restaurants, which to us, sounds like a mall without a roof…or a strip mall.   Good idea.

The panel is currently calling their concept for the new development “Lindbergh Place” a mixed use town center complete with everything from shops and restaurants to YMCA’s and parks.

At this point the Planning Director Donna Lewis says the mall property is so outdated that it doesn’t make sense to even reuse the current structures. She said the best option would be to simply level the mall and start over.

Visit St. Louis! It’s Difficulty is ‘Easy’ and It’s Only 6 Steps!

Apparently visiting our fair city is foreign enough to people that someone had to write an article on eHow describing the steps to take.  Here is a sampling:

Difficulty: Easy

St. Louis is known as the gateway to the west and it was the first major settlement west of the Mississippi. St. Louis is home to three major league sports teams: MLB-Cardinals, NFL-Rams and NHL-Blues. St. Louis was home to the 1904 World’s Fair and is also home to many other attractions, and tourist attractions.

Stock Photos of White Old People Are Racist Thinks Moron

I’m not here to be that guy that tells everyone that racism doesn’t exist any more.  It totally does and seen plenty of it with my own eyes.  This however, isn’t it:

When Sonja McClendon searched for senior housing for her 87-year-old black father in St. Louis County, she spotted advertisements for housing centers that didn’t feature any black people.
