We’re Kinda in the Corle 2 Da Video

Yes, we’ve made fun of him, and then interviewed him, and now we’re promoting his new video “Facebook Jump Off”…because he put a screenshot of us in there. Yes, even the venerable Punching Kitty has moments of whorish behavior. Whorish mind you. We aren’t whores, but sometimes we may assume the characteristics of a whore. Ladies, you know what we’re getting at right?

Anyway, local rapper Corle 2 Da dropped us a line to let us know that we made the cut and have a quick cameo in his latest video (see animated gif version below, and the full version is after the jump).

When we not so subtly suggested that we appear in one of his famed YouTube videos during the interview it appeared our chances were slim at best.

PK: You’ve given visual shoutouts to the RFT in both “So St. Louis” and “Digital” is this interview our first step in getting a Punching Kitty appearance?

Corle: Ah a Punching Kitty appearance…in an upcoming video I’m guessing, well it is definitely a possibility, the RFT has been real supportive of my work and I appreciate that.  I saw you won an award at RFT web awards as well didn’t you?  Really though, they are great at recognizing people and topics in the community.

…yet here we sit, watching an animated gif go back and forth! In turn for this, we will guarantee the following things for Corle 2 Da as a thank you.

1,000 video views. (To keep things simple on the accounting side, we’ll just take credit for the first 1,000.)

A picture of ET dressed as Mr. T…

…and one post where we don’t take a single shot at him.

Check out his full video for “Facebook Jump Off” below.

10 Questions For Local Rapper Corle 2 Da

Posted by The Editor on 11 Feb 2011 /

We haven’t done one of our ever so popular 10 question interviews in a while so it’s way past time for that to return and we can’t think of a better person to bring it back with than local rapper Corle 2 Da. Yes, that Corle 2 Da. The very one we (in)famously took a few shots at, and who later dropped us a line to let us know that he can take a joke, which is awesome! So in honor of that particularly scarce skill that we can only hope others learn from [Editor's Note: Looking at you Loesch, Jaco, Marlow, religious people and fatties!], we shot a few questions his way to get a little better understanding of the man behind the YouTube videos.

—

Punching Kitty: Lets get right to it! We famously reviewed your “So St. Louis” video, but to be fair, it’s done quite well on YouTube with well over 20k views. Has the response been as good as YouTube makes it seem?

Actually the response from “So St. Louis” has been very good, it is doing well on youtube, as well as it was just nominated for video of the year by RFT.  Haha you guys got a few good ones in on me on that review…but it’s all good, gotta take the good with the bad….no thin skins….

PK: You had at least 823 different locations in that video, how long did it take to film?

The video for “So St. Louis” took about 4-5 total days to shoot…we were really on the move all over the city…but it was all a learning experience, and I would say overall it turned out good, for having little to no budget.

PK: The new video is “Digital” which leads off with a chase scene of sorts. Where did you film that?

The chase scene in the “Digital” video was shot in a server building in St. Louis.

PK: How much was “Digital” influenced by Weird Al Yankovic’s “It’s All About the Pentiums“? Weird Al is like the Beatles to all rappers right?

That Weird Al Yankovic song is actually pretty funny, I had no idea that video existed until I watched your link…so unfortunately the “Digital” song was not influenced by Weird Al, but i can definitely see why someone would think that or even ask that question.  Lol another good comparison!

PK: Give us a little background: How long have you been at preforming? Where are you from?

Background on Corle 2 Da…I was born in Alton, reside in Belleville, and have been performing locally around St. Louis, The Eastside (Illinois),  Chicago, and Memphis since 2003.

PK: Can you explain the story behind your name?

The story behind the name….ok, to make a long story short, I used to go by the artist/stage name of Corleone Da Hustla, after a few years with that I wanted to switch it up, as well as shorten it up, so I shortened Corleone to Corle, dropped off the “Hustla”, and the 2 comes from well like pt. 2, rebirth, sequel, whatever…so basically in a nutshell that is how i came up with the name Corle 2 Da, pronounced (Cor- Lee Two- duh) for those who didn’t know….

PK: Clearly you’re a cardinals fan. What you do think about the Pujols situation? Is he going to stick around?

Pujols situation is crazy! I believe it would be best for him, his career, the Cardinal Organization, and Cardinal Nation if we get him signed before SPRING TRAINING!!!! It will be a sad day in St. Louis if Albert Pujols signs a multiyear contract with another team and doesn’t retire a Cardinal……

PK: You’ve given visual shoutouts to the RFT in both “So St. Louis” and “Digital” is this interview our first step in getting a Punching Kitty appearance?

Ah a Punching Kitty appearance…in an upcoming video I’m guessing, well it is definitely a possibility, the RFT has been real supportive of my work and I appreciate that.  I saw you won an award at RFT web awards as well didn’t you?  Really though, they are great at recognizing people and topics in the community.

PK: How many blueberry muffins do you think you could eat in an hour?

I could probably eat about 25-30 blueberry muffins in an hour, that would also depend on the size of the muffins and if Milk was included!

PK: Good answer!

PK: So what’s next? Where do you go from “Digital”?

After “Digital” we will be shooting the next single which is called “Movement”  it will be a darker video…a bit more grimy, but it should be a great video, then after that look for something for the LADIES!

PK: …so it’s a grimy video called “Movement”? Um…we may have already seen that. Came out a few years ago…we think it was called “Corle 2 Girls 1 Cup”

PK: Seriously though, thanks again for the time man and good luck in the future! Anything else you want to add?

I would like to shout out to all the guys at Media Outlaws, Hollow Wear, and Red River Ent. that help me make it happen! Shout out to Punching Kitty!

Did you just feel that?! It was us, getting mad cred.

Rapper Pissed ESPN Used His Song No One’s Heard of on Their National Broadcast

Posted by The Editor on 09 Feb 2011 /

First, before we get to the meat of this little ordeal, we want you to know that KSDK brought us this story from Frank Wiley reporting live from downtown St. Louis last night.

Why? No clue. None of this had anything to do with downtown St. Louis. Maybe Frank had to smoke or fart or something so he took his work outside. It added nothing to the story of a local rapper suing ESPN, but maybe if you hit your head really really hard or take a day and drink nothing by antifreeze it might make more sense.

Anyway, some local rapper you haven’t heard of is suing ESPN because they played his song on their widely watched national TV network.

Local rapper and music producer Michael “Dutch” Jackson says ESPN used his music without his knowledge or permission.

Jackson filed a 31-page lawsuit with the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District, last week. He says ESPN, Amazon and And-1, a basketball apparel company used his unreleased song, “I Am the Greatest,” to promote its product. Now, he’s looking for financial compensation, and notoriety.

After a clip of him bobbing his head to his own song like Kevin Federline kicking it to Popo Zao back in the day, “Dutch” claimed his unreleased song was “leaked” and then And-1 Studios used it in one of their basketball highlight clips, ESPN aired in and then Amazon sold the video online, so they’re all getting sued! All he wants is an undisclosed amount of financial compensation…and to be on KSDK. Halfway there! …plus after all of this he’ll have the contact info for ESPN, Amazon and And-1 Studios so he can call them back and beg them to use his other songs he’d be happy to “leak” to them.

“I know if I steal from somebody, I’m going to jail. It’s not right,” said Jackson.

If he’s right and has proof, he’ll get a little settlement and his song will be scrubbed from their clip allowing “Dutch” to take his beer money and head back in to obscurity. Meanwhile Mike Bush has your back Dutch because this shiz is straight whack yo! Right Mikey B?! Holla atcha boy!

Word.

Ugh. Seriously, we’re all dying out here for something to report on this week. If one of you could crash your car through a Jack in the Box or go dress up like a clown and sucker punch kids at a mall or something that would really help us all out.

Great Moments in Native St. Louisan History: Akon Throws a Dude Off-Stage

Posted by The Editor on 16 Nov 2010 /

St. Louis has a rich tradition of fine people hailing from our city, sloppy with “midwestern values” they move out in to other cities always carrying with them the badge of “St. Louis Native”. We don’t think some of these people get enough credit, so we, from time to time, will honor these fine individuals reaching for the stars.

Today’s feature? Rapper and St. Louis native Akon.

It was over 3 years ago when perma-angry rapper and native St. Louisan (born in St. Louis, and raised in Dakar and Senegal), Akon took the stage at Dutchess Stadium. During a stirring monologue about culture, chicks and saying “you know” a bunch of times, a 15 year old kid threw something at Akon, who demanded the kid be pointed out so that a security guard could fetch him. Once brought on stage and the removal of his shirt and all jewelry, or “ice” as it’s sometimes called, Akon picked up the kid and threw him off stage, quickly returning to his soliloquy.

It made for one hell of a YouTube video and surely helped Akon keep his badboy rep, but the thing about tossing 15 year-old white kids is that what goes up, must come down…specifically he came down on Abby Rosa, giving her a concussion to take home from the concert.

This wasn’t the only Akon issue in 2007, he also dry-humped a girl on stage that was later found to be 15.

Akon: One native St. Louisan that loves to touch 15 year olds.

The RFT Throws Their Panties at Weird St. Louis Rap Video Guy

Oh look the RFT’s Music blog has an interview with some local rapper named “Corle 2 Da”…why does that name sound familiar?…

You may have seen this excellent vid floating around the Interwebz in the past two weeks. “So St. Louis” is the work of one Corle 2 Da, a Belleville rapper looking to make his mark on this side of the river.

Belleville rapper…god this all sound so familiar. Wait! “So St. Louis”!? As in making it rain with singles “So St. Louis”?

No. This is the “excellent vid floating around the Interwebz”?! Jokes! Gotta be a joke.

“A lot of people call it the new St. Louis anthem,” says Corle’s manager Ron Boles, with Red River Entertainment. “We really are happy with it. We’re gonna put the video in Vintage Vinyl where people can buy it.”

The 30-year-old started rapping with friends at age 12. Though he was born in Alton and currently resides in Belleville, Corle considers himself a dyed-in-the-wool, Provel-eating, Cards cheering, Rams-lamenting St. Louisian.

What?! Seriously?! You’re interviewing him now? For reals?

“The whole area around here thrives off of St. Louis,” Corle says.

What the hell does that even mean?! It is St. Louis. We live in St. Louis. You can’t thrive off yourself. That would create a thrive loop and would probably lead to…crappy rap videos! Ah, it’s all so clear now.

“I’ve got a couple major labels looking at him,” [Corle's agent] says. “We didn’t even expect this, 7,000 hits in less than 2 weeks.”

Yikes. No mention that “German Soccer Coach Picks Nose and Eats It” has over 12,400 views or that “Sportscaster Jim Knox Shows Off His Ball Sweat” has over 36 thousand views in a week. No, no yours is good though. Still good.

Corle’s working on an album — he says it will be out in December or January — and plans to shoot another video in October for a new single called “Digital.”

Yea! New post material!

Getting back to the main point though: Why on earth is the RFT on this guy’s jock? Look the song isn’t Tina E bad, but come on, let’s me real here. There must be some reason why the Riverfront Times would be so infatuated with bad rap…

…I guess we’ll just never know.

The Worst Music Video Ever Was Shot in a St. Louis Condo’s Kitchen

“So St. Louis” is a music video making the rounds by Corle. In case you were wondering, the song is about being “so St. Louis”, and though it might just be a serious attempt to make an hit music video, it’s far better to view under the “lame tourism video” filter. (like this one for Cleveland)

“I could just say St. Louis over and over again, that would be cool.”

“I would turn your flat-billed hat a little sideways…”

“Well god Carl, of course I’m going to turn my hat a little sideways, I…”

“…ok! Well I think that’s all you need.”

“No, it needs something more. Something really obvious.”

“More obvious than saying ‘St. Louis’ over and over?”

“Yeah…wait! What if I stand in front of every building in the greater St. Louis area!”

“Bingo.”

Now as we all know, the most crucial scene in a rap video is the party scene. Every rapper spends roughly 92% of his time at fabulous parties, so showing one of them in a video is crucial as proof to the fact of your awesome rappines. This dude did his in some condo kitchen. It’s not bad though, I think I saw a sexy lady over to the left by the hot plate:

Ok ok ok. We’ll give the guy a break he did at least manage to get the Sir-Mix-A-Lot booty shot in there, so points for that:

…but if we are going to give him points for that, we will have to deduct for “making it rain” with singles:

That really seems more like “making it drizzle”.

Click through the jump to watch the whole video and see if he shot any of it in front of your house!
