Chuck Berry to Get Statue Despite Whiners

Monday night, the University City Council “approved”, as in refused to block, the installation of a Chuck Berry statue on city property. Joe Edwards, Loop Godfather, is pleased but not everyone agrees. Some people think University City shouldn’t have a statue of Chuck Berry on community property, even though Berry has performed there 160 times including his famous monthly performance at Blueberry Hill. Despite the fact that the statue has already been made and was just sitting there, Berry’s detractors wonder why University City would want to put up a statue of a man that served time in jail.

University City’s City Council on Monday night refused to block installation of an 8-foot bronze sculpture by artist Harry Weber honoring 84-year-old Chuck Berry.

Edwards says the sculpture is to be installed Thursday or Friday, with a formal dedication scheduled for July 29.

Oddly enough, this isn’t the first time a city has ignored their connection to Berry. Wentzville, Missouri is where the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and long-time sailor according to his headwear, has lived and at one time owned a restaurant, but drive through Wentzville and you’d never know it. No “Home of Chuck Berry” signs, no “Johnny Be Good” references, just one time we saw someone rocking a faded jeans jacket, which might be a Back to the Future reference, but since it has “Whitesnake ‘Slide It In’ Tour 1984″ embossed across the back, we doubt it.

Why are people to weird about Berry doing time? We’ve celebrated a lot more for people to did a lot worse. So Chuck Berry sat in jail for four months…so what? He also, was awesome, is still awesome despite being super old, and tries really hard to do that hoppy thing to this day, and for that we celebrate him. Four months in jail is nothing! Hell, the following celebrities have each killed someone: Matthew Brodderick, Laura Bush, Rebecca Gayheart, Howard Hughes, Don King and Ted Kennedy. Seriously go look it up, ll those people killed a guy. There might not be any statues in that list, but we’re just talking about a University City statue. Hell, if you don’t like the thing you can sleep easy knowing some punks will end up stealing it or taking a shit on it by the end of August, tops.

Chuck Berry Collapses on Stage

St. Louis-area native and rock and roll legend Chuck Berry collapsed on stage in Chicago during a performance. Berry had refused medical attention earlier in the night.

“He collapsed due to exhaustion, he then came back out to the crowd and did his ‘duck walk’ dance before leaving for the night,” Andy Riesmeyer of CMG Worldwide, an agency that represents Berry, said in a statement Sunday.

Riesmeyer said Sunday that Berry, 84, “is fine” and that he has returned to his home outside St. Louis.

Exhaustion is a common theme in these Hollywood types, used as a general malady usually translating to “drunk” or “high as shit”, but in this case it appears it roughly translates to “old as hell.”

No word yet if Berry’s lethargy is related to the fact that he still refuses to take off that stupid hat.

Nelly Surprise at Downtown Chuck Berry Concert

Glad to see Nelly is allowed to preform somewhere these days.

Though by the time the show started it wasn’t much of a secret, Nelly’s “surprise” appearance in which he shared the stage with fellow native St. Louisan Chuck Berry at the Democratic Convention concert downtown last night sure geeked a lot of people up anyway.

Hopefully the fancy dinner and dancing date we took the Democratic Party officials on where we pushed our boobs up and wore that dress that our mom thinks is slutty, but works every time if you know what I mean…we mean sex…will get the DNC to feel up our city’s thigh enough where we can photograph it and bribe them to hold their conference here and then they’ll figure, “What the hell?” and bang us which of course because we are drunk we were a little loose with our rules and now we’re knocked up with the Democrat’s baby, but at least we get to go on every 24 hour news network and got to meet that other lady that John Edwards did the same thing too. She might have been a real lady though and not just a city using a lady metaphor.

Chuck Berry Visits His Old High School, Refuses to Take Off Stupid Hat

Check out these cropped screencaps of a few of the photos the St. Louis Post Dispatch took of music legend Chuck Berry getting a tour of his old high school.

Wearing that damn hat.

What is up with that thing?  Did someone tell him that’s a sweet hat, so he’s rolling with it thinking he looks cool?  Did he take a boat or dingy to his old high school?  Will no one tell Chuck Berry he looks like an ass?  We’re pretty sure he knows it’s on his head since he seems like he can see his reflection in that first post.  Maybe right there he was like “Damn it.  Who put this stupid thing on me? I can’t take it off now though, I gotta just roll with it.”

Clearly at some point in your life you revert back to not being able to correctly dress yourself.  Have we reached that point?  Is this the first stage?

Lots of questions here.  That thing is the hat equivalent of Lost.

What better way to kick off your Friday?

You may think you know that Chuck Berry is old, and its true, but no many know how old he really is.

One day I saw Blueberry Hill owner Joe Edwards in a barbershop and I went up to him and said, “Joe, between you and me…how old is Chuck Berry.”

Joe looks at me and says “Hey, Chuck Berry is 137 years old.”  137 years old!
