When did KSDK decide to start calling themselves “5 On Your Side”? Was “5 Why Do We Exist Outside of Jeopardy Syndication” even considered?!
Was it the same time that they just gave up on their website?

Good try KSDK, but a whiff for sure. One might ask: “Why the hell is local news channel KSDK making incorrect slide shows concerning the cast of a long-running national reality show that airs on a different local affiliate?” …and that would be a good question! Someone should definitely ask that.

KSDK’s Julie Tristan Got Some Attention For Her David Freese “Interview”

Julie Tristan, of KSDK and previously of 101 The River fame, got a little attention over the weekend after sports blog Deadspin took shots at her David Freese interview. Essentially, Deadspin used the piece in which Tristan rides Six Flags’ “Mr. Freeze” ride with the Cardinal third baseman and playfully hits on him with her friend, as an example of what is wrong with all local new media.

1. Are my only choices for my lineup Katie Felts, Rene Knott, and Frank Cusumano? We’d love a “Create-an-Anchor-That-Can-Pronounce-Names-Correctly” Feature! Eh who are we kidding, we’d take all the fun out of the game by maxing all the attributes to 100, making a over-sized linebacker of a sports reporter who will just run over people…just like KMOV did.

KSDK Thinks It’s On Cable, Goes Pretty Much All News

Though calling this a “Hot Topic” seems a little strong, local NBC affiliate KSDK has announced their move to kill all the fun of day-time reruns and instead bring us nearly a full day of news and “news-like” programming for a city that pretty much only has the Cardinals, the Rams, murders, and tornados to cover. It seems pretty clear that the sheer amount of murders to cover in a given day necessitated the new-centric schedule, but we’ll let them tell you about all the great people they have.

You guys stay sharp out there, a hacker is on the loose! Just ask KDSK (channel 5)’s Kay Quinn, who was recently “hacked”.

It seems I’ve been hacked. Sorry if you got the inappropriate message being send from an old account. Be sure you DON’T click on it.

People always like to lay their lack of basic computer knowledge on a “hacker” since that way they are stupid, it was a hacker that clearly must have picked them out of the billions on the planet and targeted them. Don’t know how valuable your summer photos from that vacation in 1986 are? Porn and actual money have really gotten boring to the internet criminal, so they need your boring shit now more than ever right? No. But Kay Quinn?! She’s special.1 When you’re an anchor on a local news station, you’re a target, so of course this was a “hack”, meaning someone worked really hard to guess Kay’s password (shot in the dark: “KaySDK” Were we right?! Someone check us!) and this definitely was not just Kay being a internet moron and clicking some link in her email or on Twitter giving her account away to some random kid in China with a passing knowledge of computer security.[2]

KSDK felt it necessary to post up a story about the new Cardinals reserve middle infielder Nick Punto having a groin injury, needing surgery and not being able to play until May, but they just didn’t want to elaborate much. Well there it is isn’t it? I just pretty much did the same thing they did…but better! Their story was all of 40 words long and our summary above came in at 22! The only thing they had that we don’t is a poorly cropped Cardinals logo.

A state of emergency was declared on New Years Eve by Missouri Governor Jay Nixon after a strong storm rushed across center and eastern Missouri, taking apart chunks of South St. Louis County and killing one person in Rolla. Afterward, emergency crews cleaned up the mess, a few people found new shelter for the night and the local news networks patted themselves on the back and found ways to stay on the air as long as possible. Hours later the little weather map in the corner had long since lost its bright red and yellow colors, but they pressed on, telling everyone how important going to the basement was while showing the same clip of firefighters carrying an old lady over and over again. Also did you know a fence got knocked over? Well. You missed it buddy. Crazy stuff. Oh and you’ve probably never seen a fire truck, but we have! They showed us like 20. News like this is really important.

Late Friday afternoon, after exchanging emails with an assignment editor, KSDK reporter Ashley Yarchin came to Punching Kitty headquarters to do a story about our recent post “Craigslist: Anyone Seen the Cardinals Team We Had in April?” and in turn, Punching Kitty the blog.

Once setting up all the one-man-show reporter gear in our office we talked on camera about when I started Punching Kitty, what its about, then specifically about the Craigslist post followed by a dramatic reading of my posting. I mentioned the name of the site several times, we positioned shots so that the logo and name were on screen and when she left I gave her a sticker. KSDK Exposes Minor’s Name in the Parkway Central Facebook Drama

KSDK made one hell of a production effort for one of their lovely little in-house stand-ups during a recent local news broadcast about the recent might-have-happened-but-who-knows school “shooting” incident involving Parkway Central at the little moron’s Facebook page. They even went to the trouble of bringing up that very Facebook profile in question, blowing it up on the large video monitor beside the reporter.

One thing though: He’s an uncharged minor. You aren’t supposed to be blasting his name everywhere!

It’s cool though, they thought about that little fact…about 5 seconds too late.

Reporter: [Points to screen left of camera] Now this is the profile page in question.

[Camera pans to screen showing full view of profile, including name and photo]

Reporter: …actually, lets come back to that because…uh…come back to me.

[Camera returns to reporter]

Reporter: We are going to protect this student’s name…uh…because he has not been charged.

Thanks KSDK. That’s probably all the “protecting” the kid can take today.

We aren’t sure of the ramifications for their quick legal blunder, but even it amounts to nothing, this is still pretty bad. We also still can’t figure out why they would put the profile up on the big screen if they knew they shouldn’t be showing it. In our mind, everything was cool until the minute they showed that boy’s name and some old guy in the back that’s worked there for years and hasn’t talked in months yelled out “You can’t do that! It’s agains the law!” Old guys always know the law better than anyone. Probably why the always vote and read the news and stuff. We don’t have time for that crap because of all the loud music we listen to while we horseplay.

KSDK Hitches It’s Wagon to the Worst Football Team in NFL (Rams)

KSDK-TV said Tuesday that it will launch a new, half-hour Sunday morning sports program in September as part of a new agreement with the St. Louis Rams.

Tentatively titled “Rams Tailgate,” the magazine-type program will showcase the lives of Rams players and coaches both on and off the field, the television station said, and “go beyond the traditional X’s and O’s of typical football pregame programs.”

KSDK debuted their all new “I’m Just Sayin’” segment where they apparently allow any one that has been on the radio to talk about mindless and poorly thought out things on TV.

This idea can’t fail.

When asked for a comment on how letting random people blather on about their biased opinions on a news program sounded like a good idea, a KSDK spokesman replied “Look, everyone else has been bending over the ghost of actual journalism and repeatedly fisting it for a while now. Its time News Channel 5 gloves up and gets a handful.”

Are Some Schools Closing? I Can’t Tell.

Try to watch a Conan repeat on KSDK on a cold snowy night in St. Louis and see if you can tell if any schools are closing tomorrow. Here’s a photo from last night:

There are seriously loads of problems with this, so lets toss out some easy ones like oh the fact that internet might be a way better place for this kinda crap, and start with a simple one: Are you freakin’ serious with the size of this thing?! And then on top of that, you are only showing 2 schools! Jesus, you would think you could squeeze in a few more schools. Another thing: you really don’t have to say “closed” on each one. We know. That’s why there are on the list. It’s a “School Closings List”. Yeah, yeah, there are a few schools that just start later, but couldn’t those just go on at the end of the list or with an asterisk or something? 5 schools really shouldn’t mean the whole list needs “Closed” next to everything.

News Chopper 5 Has Been Grounded

More cost-cutting measures continue to be created to keep our struggling local news operations afloat. One of the more recent ones is KSDK, channel 5’s move to dismantle their news helicopter.

From the rumor mill over on STLMedia.net:

As of February 1st KSDK no longer has a news helicopter. The camera has been removed from chopper 5. In a cost cutting move KSDK is negotiating with KMOV for a “shared use” of aerial footage, but has yet to sign an agreement. Just another sign of the need to save money.

Fox 2 Sends Reporter to Haiti, Probably Can’t Pay to Bring Them Back

According to the St. Louis Business Journal, Fox 2 has decided to send a report to Haiti…because apparently there isn’t a single stock photo or video of Haiti around anywhere! Sadly, its not Rich Gould.

Fox 2 News’ Roche Madden and cameraman John McClelland have hopped aboard a U.S. Air Force cargo plane at Scott Air Force base headed to Haiti. Madden will be the only St. Louis television reporter reporting from Haiti.

KSDK’s Art Holliday Flips a Bitch at Work, Gets Sent Home

Hey look at that Jerry Berger finally delivered some actual gossip on his website as opposed to the blatherings of various St. Louis councilmen that no one cares about. Check out Art Holliday going postal at work!

NEWS IS NEWS: KSDK (Channel 5) anchor/producer Art Holliday is known around the dial for his affable good nature. But (as Congressional candidate Ed Martin might say) , even Atlas has to shrug. Holliday was missing from the station’s downtown studio Thursday, sent out by his bosses to cool down following a newsroom tirade earlier in the week. Holliday was loudly upset after the station aired a story about a memorial service for St. Louis police officer Julius Moore. According to Channel 5’s story, the young officer and father of three was shot and killed. According to every other news outlet (and the Police Department), he died of injuries sustained in an auto accident en route to assist a fellow Third District officer. The columnist commends Holliday for his outrage.

Missouri has recorded its second swine flu death, and the first in the western part of the state.

State health officials say a 24-year-old Independence woman died Wednesday night, several days after she was hospitalized with symptoms including diarrhea, coughing and extreme fatigue. Her name was not released.

Look, KSDK, I don’t know how to tell you this…geez…um, we don’t care about Swine Flu any more. We’ve moved on to more important issues like Kanye West, so you should move on too. Sure its kinda interesting that the Swine Flu symptoms seem to be exactly like what happens after caving and eating at Taco Bell, but do we really need to count each one?

First Deanne Lane, then Cordell Whitlock, who’s next to leave local NBC affiliate KSDK? Apparently it could be anyone because our source says they are all pretty pissed:

****…morale is way down there because of forced pay cuts everyone had to take last year. That’s why you’ve seen several resignations there in the last year and you’ll likely see a few more.

This recent reports matches what much of what me and others have heard for a while now: No one is happy there. We aren’t just talking about “I work in a dying media that is run by morons” pissed off, this is really pissed off.

KSDK vs St. Louis’ Finest: Its On Now!

A little while back we told you about the brewing war between St. Louis’ NBC affiliate KSDK and St. Louis Cops.

It appears channel 5’s reporter Leisa Zigman didn’t feel reportery enough so she got out her fedora, tucked her press pass in the band and went off to uncover a scandal! Long story short, she didn’t find one. Instead, Zigman decided to do a “report” on St. Louis police officers parking in no-parking spaces throughout the city, including in front of their own station! [Editor’s Note: Dun dun daaaaaaaaa!]

Apparently even long time veterans of local TV news can get tired of doing yet another “Damn its hot” or “Wow its cold story.” After being ejected from KSDK, and mulling offers from both KTVI and KMOV Deanne Lane has decided go the route of her old KSDK comrade and head in to the the business world. Lane will be joining St. Louis based Centene as their director of media according to STLMediaStuff.blogspot.com. Its that “up to 140 characters” thing that seems to be hard to understand for KSDK reporter, and recent focus of police officer ire, Leisa Zigman.

That is apparently channel 5, ksdk’s Mogulus account. What is Mogulus? Its a service for streaming live video to the web.

Anyone have any idea what they are doing with this? There’s lots of great things they could do with a Mogulus account [Ed Note: I’m being serious.] but their track record says they aren’t using it to the fullest, or at all.

One Crazy Slow News Day: USA Today Reports Trains are On Time.

USA Today reported yesterday that Amtrak is reporting that their trains going between St. Louis and Kansas City are 96% on time. Seriously.

This is a fucking joke right? Who could possible give a shit about this?! Maybe the article will tell me…

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Amtrak trains traveling between Kansas City and St. Louis turned in a stellar on-time rate for January.

The Missouri Department of Transportation said Tuesday that the trains were on schedule 96% of the time. MoDOT credits better dispatching by Union Pacific and $400 million in track repairs that allowed the trains to move faster.

Fox 2 Redesigns Their Website to Match the Rest of the St. Louis’ Websites

The recently redesigned and relaunched website for St. Louis’ Fox affiliate on channel 2 just went live with a new domain: fox2now.com. Abandoning the fairly recent Fox-wide “MyFox[insert city abbreviation].com” push already is a bit of a mystery to most, but the issue is fairly clear after a quick twitter search:

According to STLMedia.net, heads might be rolling at KSDK after Gannett tried and failed to force a week long, un-paid, vacation for its employees. The word is, the lay offs could come as soon as next week.

If “famous” heads are getting lopped off from media companies, couldn’t we at least turn this in to some fun for someone? What if KSDK said, Survivor style, that the following people were up for “elimination” and then we get the vote to see who gets the axe?!
