PUNCHING KITTY: 2009 - 2013

Punching Kitty was a writing project for the city of St. Louis to have a little fun and try to get everyone to stop taking themselves so seriously…and hopefully highlight some critical issues along the way. Not everyone liked it (it turns out people don’t love being made fun of) but we converted a lot of people and I take pride that the site was truly well read. From the local media, to area police departments, Punching Kitty truly became a source for news and entertainment for St. Louis.

We had a lot of fun, but all good things need an ending and ours was on March 13th, 2013. When we closed up shop the news made local radio, TV, and even the front page of STLToday (The St. Louis Post Dispatch’s website) where we were the top story over a new pope being named. Wild stuff.

While we will no longer actively write, the site will stay up as an archive for St. Louis.

Rams Hire Josh McDaniels as Offensive Coordinator Who Gets Immediately Wiki-libeled

To fill the coaching hole left by the new Cleveland Browns head coach Pat Shurmur, the Rams made a big “splash” hire by picking up hot offensive coordinator prospect Josh McDaniels. McDaniels, you may remember, was recently the head coach for the horrible Denver Broncos and before that the boy-genius behind the New England Patriots’ prolific offenses in 2006-2008. Also someone out in California doesn’t like him much. As you can see in the image above from our tipster, someone added the following line to the end of McDaniels’ Wikipedia bio: Josh McDaniels is a Seld-Professed [sic] “Homosexual” and “Jew-Basher[“], and is on very good terms with Mel Gibson. Missouri’s Credit Scores Below National Average

In rather unsurprising news today we learned that Missouri’s credit scores are below the national average by ten points. Bruce McClary with Clear Point Credit Counseling Solutions said Missouri residents on average are about ten points below the rest of the country receiving an average score of 658. With lower scores, it will cost more to borrow money. McClary said someone with a credit score of 658 will pay about $140 more per month on a mortgage. [Read More]

Thanks Riverfront Times for the Web Award Finalist Selection

The finalists for the Riverfront Times’ “2011 St. Louis Web Awards” came out yesterday and in the category of “Best Local Celebrity Site” we were selected! We’re honored. Glad to hear dick jokes still really count for something in this town. We haven’t won yet though and we are up against ReviewSTL‘s Celebrity Gossip section and ToastedRav (Ahem). A panel will select the winner in each category which will be announced next Tuesday. [Read More]

Mayor Slay Declared Yesterday “Lewis Place Day”

Our honorable Mayor Slay spent part of his Monday at Lewis Place, an historic African-American neighborhood north of the Central West End that was hit hard by the infamous New Year’s Eve tornados. The neighborhood is an important one for the area because… The first black families to buy homes on Lewis Place ran into property-deed covenants that prohibited owners from selling to blacks. The U.S. Supreme Court overturned those covenants in a landmark 1948 case known as Shelley v. [Read More]

A Homeless Guy Walking Down 270 Finally Got a Mail Delivery

You know that important bill you not going to get? No? Oh, well…it’s on 270 by Dorsett Road. We’re sure it will be fine though, we hear mortgage companies are usually pretty chill on stuff like that. U.S. Postal Inspector Dan Taylor says the back door of a tractor trailer popped open on Interstate 270 near Dorsett Road in Maryland Heights around 4:30 a.m. Sunday. The truck continued onto Interstate 55 to Ste. [Read More]

St. Louis Girl Scouts Changing Cookie Names

The Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri have gone mad with power. Sure we guess it’s within the rules to create a division called “The Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri” even though it sounds dumb, but to start just willy nilly changing time-honored cookie names?! We don’t think there is ever an excuse to punch a little girl in the face but…we guess there is now. The Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri have switched bakeries after 20 years, from Little Brownie Bakers, a subsidiary of Keebler, to ABC Bakers, a subsidiary of Interbake Foods. [Read More]

A Cardinals Winter Warm-Up Wrap-Up

Each off-season, the Cardinals hold their annual “Winter Warm-Up” about this time, consisting of player interviews, banquets, fan-forums, autograph sessions and a chance to get old fan-favorite players to come out in an effort to get as many hoosiers to take a hammer to their piggy bank, pile in their truck and come on in to the big city. Not exactly our scene. Others cover the even much better and with far less kicking of shins than we would, so we leave it to them and then recap the whole thing, in no particular order, the following Monday. [Read More]

Homeless Camp Hopeville Under Fire Over Fires

St. Louis premiere homeless person shanty town Hopeville, which we’ve covered before, is under city pressure again. The city thinks the current Hopeville installation is a fire hazard after three tents burned last week. In the fire last week, one tent caught fire, and witnesses said it spread to at least two others. A few propane tanks that were being stored in the first tent exploded. While a propane heater was being used in the tent, it was unclear how the fire started. [Read More]

Town and Country Alderman is a Horrible Liar

You should be ashamed of yourself. The deer are what make Town and Country such a nice place to live. It’s aldermen like you who should be shot. That’s one of the emails Town and Country Alderman David Karney sent to fellow Alderman Fred Meyland-Smith after the two disagreed on how to handle their community’s deer population problem. We initially guessed it was because Alderman Fred Meyland-Smith uses a hyphenated last name which, as we all know, is only done by people that no respect of the sanctity of last names and deserve nothing but our collective ire.
