PUNCHING KITTY: 2009 - 2013

Punching Kitty was a writing project for the city of St. Louis to have a little fun and try to get everyone to stop taking themselves so seriously…and hopefully highlight some critical issues along the way. Not everyone liked it (it turns out people don’t love being made fun of) but we converted a lot of people and I take pride that the site was truly well read. From the local media, to area police departments, Punching Kitty truly became a source for news and entertainment for St. Louis.

We had a lot of fun, but all good things need an ending and ours was on March 13th, 2013. When we closed up shop the news made local radio, TV, and even the front page of STLToday (The St. Louis Post Dispatch’s website) where we were the top story over a new pope being named. Wild stuff.

While we will no longer actively write, the site will stay up as an archive for St. Louis.

Emmis No Longer Paying for Employee Parking

Updated!  See below original post…

We hear Emmis, the radio company that operates 105.7 the Point, 97.1, KSHE, and KHITS, has stopped paying for their employee’s parking passes at their Union Station office.

What does this mean? Yup. Emmis’ poor underpaid jocks now have to pay to park at work.

Lame and sad.

Well, at least they have all those fabulous shops in Union Station to hang out at…oh wait.

Do Ladies Like to be Hit On at the Gym?

A fellow St. Louisian asks on Craigslist:

Not really sure where this should be posted…but my question to you ladies…

…while working out at the gym, do you/would you be open to a man approaching you?

It’s not that I’m afraid to, I just wonder bc I wouldn’t want to intrude on “your time”, as I’m there for the main reason of working out, but sometimes can’t help one of u catching my eye!

Commenter Paints a Sad Picture of Working at the Post Dispatch

In a recent post about the Post Dispatch and their financial troubles, I put a call out for anyone that works there to tell us what its like.  That call was answered by a commenter and after reading it, I felt it needed the attention a full post brings.  The question posed was “What’s the vibe like there?”

The vibe is not knowing…a numbness that has you just fulfill your duties and go home. It used to be a vibrant place when I first got there, but now there’s alot of empty space, the people who would stop by and say hi don’t have the time to anymore, and everything changes some more in an almost predictable pattern. You can hear it in voices, see it in eyes, and every meeting or email from certain people makes your heart jump into your throat and stay there until your survival is assured.

Carol Thinks the Post Dispatch Jumped the Shark, and SuperDave Concurs

I’m not 100% sure that Carol knows what “Jumped the Shark” means, but I am sure she must lead a sad little life to have this bug her so much.

From STLToday’s Letters to the Editor blog:

I think the St. Louis Post-Dispatch has finally jumped the shark. I knew they were biased against Republicans, but to not have put Michael Steele’s picture on the front of Saturday’s newspaper was a major gaffe that spoke volumes. Mr. Steel is the first African-American Chairman of the RNC. He is now the leader of the Republican Party. For the first time in history, the leaders of both political parties are African-American. For the past six months, Mr. Obama has been on the cover of every publication day after day.

Your Guide to Each Side of 270

picture-1

I went out to the parent’s house out in the depths of St. Charles County today for the big game.  It was the first time I’ve traveled west of 270 for the first time in months and after reminding myself of the differences I thought I would make a little field guide for those that stick to their side of town.

Post-Dispatch the Latest to Beg Their Employees Not to Come to Work

Add the Post-Dispatch to the list of bleeding old-media companies that are forcing everyone they can [read: non-union employees] to take a one-week unpaid furlough.

From BizJournals.com:

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch has ordered all 300 of its nonunion employees to take a one-week unpaid furlough.

The newspaper also suspended all 2009 merit raises for nonunion workers and the company match for its 401(k) program.

The Post’s parent, Davenport, Iowa-based Lee Enterprises (NYSE: LEE), is $1.3 billion in debt, mostly due to its acquisition of Pulitzer Inc. in June 2005.

St. Louis’ Overbearing Christians Now Think Super Bowl Refs Hate Warner’s Faith

picture-2

…I’m assuming.

I mean, its a safe bet right?  Look at the history:

  1. Kurt does well but then after repeated beatings from a crappy offensive line, he play and health deteriorates to a point that St. Louis is forced to go with Marc Bulger.

  2. St. Louis’s Overbearing Christians think the Rams and the people that support their decision hate Kurt not for this shoddy play, but because people hate his faith.

Free Beer for Ladies: August Busch IV is Back on the Market

St. Louis beer millionaire August Busch IV is back on the market after this divorce from his younger wife of just 2 years.  The worst part, this one slipped right by us.  Which really pisses. me. off.  Damn.  Unlike us, STLog has been following this story closely. (+1 for them for breaking this one….you bastards!)

Busch IV divorced his wife Kathryn Lisa Busch (formerly Kathryn Thatcher) on Wednesday in St. Louis County Circuit Court. The couple married just over two years ago. Busch is 44. His ex-wife just 28.
