PUNCHING KITTY: 2009 - 2013

Punching Kitty was a writing project for the city of St. Louis to have a little fun and try to get everyone to stop taking themselves so seriously…and hopefully highlight some critical issues along the way. Not everyone liked it (it turns out people don’t love being made fun of) but we converted a lot of people and I take pride that the site was truly well read. From the local media, to area police departments, Punching Kitty truly became a source for news and entertainment for St. Louis.

We had a lot of fun, but all good things need an ending and ours was on March 13th, 2013. When we closed up shop the news made local radio, TV, and even the front page of STLToday (The St. Louis Post Dispatch’s website) where we were the top story over a new pope being named. Wild stuff.

While we will no longer actively write, the site will stay up as an archive for St. Louis.

Cy Young Pitcher Enjoys a Little Fast Eddie’s Before Spring Training

We hear Cy Young winning pitcher and White Sox ace, Mark Buehrle, was over at Fast Eddie’s yesterday.

Buehrle is from the St. Louis area (he graduated from Francis Howell North) and his family still lives in town, so this is of little surprise, but its just nice to hear he gets back to the area in the offseason and partakes in some of the local favorites even after hitting the big time.

Did You Know About Terry Crouppen’s St. Louis?!

Did You Know About Terry Crouppen’s St. Louis?!

Somehow I’ve managed to missed the insane bad TV brilliance of Great Day St. Louis until recently, and now I’ve been nothing but obsessed with watching clip after clip of a show that I keep waiting to end with “Gotcha!” or Will Ferrell announcing “the weather man is dead!  I killed the weather man!”

Take this little segment for example:

Are Office Parties the Secret to Keep Employees Happy These Days

milton

When the economy is rough, raises stop, trips get canceled, bonuses are clamped and those types of things generally make the average worker sad.  So what’s a company do to?  From what we hear, many in St. Louis are turning to cheap office “parties”.

Step 1: Think of reason for party.

Step 2: Buy some food.

Step 4: Happy employees

Step 5: Profit!

We aren’t sure how well this works, but for the record, its better than not having free lunch.  I don’t know if I’m so happy I’ve forgotten about the other things that have been dropped from the Company Perk Menu, but eh…better than not having a job, although a bit ironic that the ones that still have jobs get free food.

One Crazy Slow News Day: USA Today Reports Trains are On Time.

USA Today reported yesterday that Amtrak is reporting that their trains going between St. Louis and Kansas City are 96% on time.  Seriously.

This is a fucking joke right?  Who could possible give a shit about this?!  Maybe the article will tell me…

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Amtrak trains traveling between Kansas City and St. Louis turned in a stellar on-time rate for January.

The Missouri Department of Transportation said Tuesday that the trains were on schedule 96% of the time. MoDOT credits better dispatching by Union Pacific and $400 million in track repairs that allowed the trains to move faster.

Pictures of One Crazy Day at Denny’s

The creatively named STLToday blog “Pictures” has some great shots of the craziness at a local Denny’s with that “Free Grand Slam” deal they threw out at the Super Bowl.

The minute they announced that, I just felt that every Denny’s employee let out a collective “Shit!”  Seems to me they should have waited later in the game so as to not ruin their Super Bowl.

More Horrible Local TV Promos: “Here’s 2 St. Louis” From Fox 2

I’m sure most of you remember this one: “Here’s 2 St. Louis”  the promo when KTVI tried to make us feel warm and fuzzy about a place that has “the class of a city and the heart of a town” so we would forget about the mess that was the “channel 12 is now channel 2 and channel 2 is now channel 12” mess a few years back.

Before you click over the jump to view the video, check out my favorite still frame from it:

Dick Ford and Dave Murry sitting out on a riverboat or something enjoying the day, pointing out the sites.  Are we to believe that this is what they do on their days off?  They hang out like an old gay couple?  God I hope thats true.

Local Magazine Death Watch 2009: The Beginning

Local Magazine Death Watch 2009: The Beginning

death_magazines

We at PunchingKitty love magazines.  The numbers, however, say the the rest of the world doesn’t.  To that we ask: Don’t you people poop?

That however is beside the point.

Right now, by our count St. Louis has 4 magazines that are worth counting.  We’re thinking no matter how many they give away for free all four can’t survive to see 2010, so now starts PunchingKitty.com’s Local Magazine Death Watch 2009.
