PUNCHING KITTY: 2009 - 2013

Punching Kitty was a writing project for the city of St. Louis to have a little fun and try to get everyone to stop taking themselves so seriously…and hopefully highlight some critical issues along the way. Not everyone liked it (it turns out people don’t love being made fun of) but we converted a lot of people and I take pride that the site was truly well read. From the local media, to area police departments, Punching Kitty truly became a source for news and entertainment for St. Louis.

We had a lot of fun, but all good things need an ending and ours was on March 13th, 2013. When we closed up shop the news made local radio, TV, and even the front page of STLToday (The St. Louis Post Dispatch’s website) where we were the top story over a new pope being named. Wild stuff.

While we will no longer actively write, the site will stay up as an archive for St. Louis.

Bonneville Employees Take a Salary Cut

old_radioIn a press release from Bonneville Radio (who locally owns 101 ESPN, WIL 92.3 and 106.5 The Arch), emphasis mine:

In response to sustained, slow economic indices and market conditions that are producing below-projected revenues industry-wide, Bonneville International today announced to its employees a series of cost-reducing measures designed to trim operating expenses while at the same time continuing to produce high-quality products for its audiences and clients.  Among those measures implemented are salary reductions for its higher-paid employees, adjustments to vacation accruals and carryovers, elimination of company-participation health club memberships, and a reduction of holiday remembrances for employees.

St. Charles County Ambulance Board Members Know How to Party

STG17240.gifDan McLaughlin (right) is quite the St. Charles County Ambulance Board Member.

For one, he shares the name of the Cardinals TV broadcaster.

For two, he looks like Jack Nicholson’s love child with Eddie Munster.

For three, this one time he got drunk and drove around in his car.

For four, this other time he got drunk and drove around in his car.

For five, this other other time, he got drunk and drove around in his car.

The St. Louis Spring 2009 Radio Ratings are In

Real quick review for those that may have forgotten or never heard of it:

Radio is the transmission of signals by modulation of electromagnetic waves with frequencies below those of visible light.[1] Electromagnetic radiation travels by means of oscillating electromagnetic fields that pass through the air and the vacuum of space. Information is carried by systematically changing (modulating) some property of the radiated waves, such as amplitude, frequency, or phase. When radio waves pass an electrical conductor, the oscillating fields induce an alternating current in the conductor. This can be detected and transformed into sound or other signals that carry information.

Missouri Band is Sad About Making Kids Sad

The+Get+Up+KidsThe Get Up Kids have told the Guardian that they apologize for inventing emo.

“If this is the world we helped create,” guitarist James Suptic said, after looking into the crowd at a reunion gig, “then I apologise.”

Oh its ok guys.  Emo isn’t all bad!  There are some good things…

“There should be a How to Be a Pop-Punk Kid Starter Kit with bands like the Get Up Kids, so kids would know whose shoulders bands like us are standing on,” Fall Out Boy’s Pete Wentz told Alternative Press in 2005. “Fall Out Boy would not be a band if it were not for the Get Up Kids.

Jackie Joyner Kersee is a Mac

460x260_Jackie Joyner-Kersee_200812181047We hear East St. Louis alum and Olympic athlete Jackie Joyner Kersee stopped by the West County Apple Store the other day to make a purchase.

We hope she came in the store just like she is in that photo to the right.

Yadi Gets the ESPN Magazine Cover

We love ourselves some Pujols out here and the world knows it, but from time to time its good to see someone else on the team to get a little of the spotlight.  From our extensive research, we’ve found that if St. Louis had to pick a second favorite Cardinal, most would say the same guy: Yadier Molina

Guess who got the next cover of ESPN the magazine and is sporting a pretty bad-ass catcher pose?!

Street Musician: A CurrentTV Video Flimed in the Loop

This is a little old being as it was posted in October of last year, but I just ran across it today and its a great little piece shot in the Loop about a street musician named Bryson Gerard.  I know I’ve seen this guy sitting in front of Vintage Vinyl from time to time, and I’m guessing many of you have too.

The page for this on Current is here: current.com/items/89393462_street-musician-st-louis.htm

Mark Buehrle Does the Letterman Top 10

Maybe you didn’t hear, but St. Louis native Mark Buehrle pitched a perfect game the other day.  You might have missed it, no one here talked about it much or mentioned he was from St. Louis.  Anyway, when you do something good, eventually you get to go on Letterman and do the Top 10.

It was Mark Buehrle’s turn:

Not a horrible Top 10, but number 2 fell a little flat.
