PUNCHING KITTY: 2009 - 2013

Punching Kitty was a writing project for the city of St. Louis to have a little fun and try to get everyone to stop taking themselves so seriously…and hopefully highlight some critical issues along the way. Not everyone liked it (it turns out people don’t love being made fun of) but we converted a lot of people and I take pride that the site was truly well read. From the local media, to area police departments, Punching Kitty truly became a source for news and entertainment for St. Louis.

We had a lot of fun, but all good things need an ending and ours was on March 13th, 2013. When we closed up shop the news made local radio, TV, and even the front page of STLToday (The St. Louis Post Dispatch’s website) where we were the top story over a new pope being named. Wild stuff.

While we will no longer actively write, the site will stay up as an archive for St. Louis.

Riverfront Times Takes Down BestofStLouis.com

The site BestofStLouis.com is gone. There isn’t even a traditional “It’s over” page…it’s just gone. The domain now goes to an all-ad page. What happened? Lawyers and copyright law happened, and the heat came from the Riverfront Times. As we’re sure you’re aware, each year the Riverfront Times puts out its “Best of St. Louis” issue and because of that believes it holds the rights to the term “Best of St. [Read More]

Apparently People Don’t Like Dan McLaughlin

From the moment we posted about Dan McLaughlin this morning, we’ve been hearing report after report from all over about how lots and lots of people don’t like old “Danny Mac”. Lots of people are, dare we say, happy about this little traffic stop and following mug shot. …and then we got this thrown our way: The fact that someone took the time to make and circulate this says a lot. River City Rascals, Completely Out of Ideas, Sign Little Person

Anything to get Fox 2’s Tim Ezell to come visit huh River City Rascals? In an effort to reenact Bill Veeck’s famous “sign a midget since no one can strike him out” move last night, the O’Fallon, Misouri independent league baseball team, signed a short(est) stop of their own. Welcome Eddie Gaedel 2010 aka Nick Hagan! According to Nick’s bio on the Rascals site, he is listed as “utility” under position. [Read More]

Dan McLaughlin Gets Busted For Drinky Drinky Drivey Drivey

Update: Now with 100% more awesome mugshot action! Yeah, he looked really sober. Probably not guilty. He looks like Jack Nicholson’s drunk chubby little brother. You see the key to looking sober is to cross your eyes and give the camera a creepy sly smile. This may be the greatest St. Louis mugshot since Ozzy Osbourne. Original post below… Dan McLaughlin, Cardinals TV broadcaster on Fox Sports Midwest, was pulled over and arrested on suspicion of drunk driving Monday night after refusing to submit to a breathalyzer test. Awesome Baboon Hoax Dropped on St. Louis Yesterday

Since when do we listen to 14 year old girls? Have they proven themselves trustworthy? No, they haven’t. 14 years are the epitome of dramatic little creatures that will lie for attention. “I heard Sarah say that Bobby thinks your ugly.”, “Love that skirt Katie! …whatever.”, “The janitor touched me!” You can’t believe a word 14 year old girls say! First off, Allen the Janitor is a saint! You can’t have a mustache, jeans jacket and a blacked out window-less van with a bag of Butterfingers in the back and not be a lovely gentleman. [Read More]

Washington Avenue Closed for Bomb Squad

Police closed Washington Avenue downtown yesterday between 10th and 11th because someone reported “suspicious” canisters under a park bench. “Suspicious” is just what you say though after the bomb squad has already been called. They just looked like cans otherwise (right). Police took x-rays of the canisters and said it looked like the contents might be concrete samples. More testing will be done elsewhere to make sure the canisters posed no threat. [Read More]

You Know that Giant Missouri Sex Offender List? That’s Not All of Them

After an audit of Missouri’s sex offenders database, it was found that 7 percent of convicted pervs hadn’t registered despite the legal mandate. Montee released her audit of the sex offender registration program Wednesday. Generally, it found improvement from a review eight years ago. But the audit said Missouri — like most states — has not yet complied with federal sex offender requirements. Missouri’s deadline is July 2011. 7 percent is probably a lot more people than you would think, guess and hope. [Read More]

Missouri Funeral Protests are Legal Again

Get ready recently widowed women who’s husbands were in the business of something we don’t like! You are one boring Saturday with us having posterboard and markers laying around from us getting in your face! Missouri has re-legalized funeral protests. U.S. District Judge Fernando Gaitan ruled the laws violate the right of free speech guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution. Gaitan concluded Missouri officials did not demonstrate the protest restrictions served a significant government interest nor that they had been narrowly tailored to prevent the harm of interruptions of funeral services. Bryan Burwell Out at 101ESPN?

Though the usually prompt expunging of a jettisoned host from a radio website still hasn’t happened as of this writing, Dan Ceasar of STLToday.com is reporting that his fellow columnist Bryan Burwell has been yanked from his own show on the FM sport talk station, 101 ESPN. Sources said the move was ratings-related and not tied to any other issue, and that Burwell still could be involved in Rams game day programming. [Read More]
