PUNCHING KITTY: 2009 - 2013

Punching Kitty was a writing project for the city of St. Louis to have a little fun and try to get everyone to stop taking themselves so seriously…and hopefully highlight some critical issues along the way. Not everyone liked it (it turns out people don’t love being made fun of) but we converted a lot of people and I take pride that the site was truly well read. From the local media, to area police departments, Punching Kitty truly became a source for news and entertainment for St. Louis.

We had a lot of fun, but all good things need an ending and ours was on March 13th, 2013. When we closed up shop the news made local radio, TV, and even the front page of STLToday (The St. Louis Post Dispatch’s website) where we were the top story over a new pope being named. Wild stuff.

While we will no longer actively write, the site will stay up as an archive for St. Louis.

KLOU to Add Steph Duran For Afternoon Drive

103.3 KLOU is making the move back to more local on-air talent during the day after only having a local morning show, a slot recently vacated by Julie Buck. Which means there is actually a radio station looking for on-air talent, which is about as rare these days as a Cardinals victory or a leprechaun riding a unicorn that poops Cinnamon Toast Crunch. The sound you’re hearing is the thunder of out of work radio people running towards KLOU. The sound you aren’t hearing is anyone other than radio professionals giving a damn.

The first one in the gate at the new KLOU schedule? We hear it’s y98 and 101.1 Movin’ alum Steph Duran. Who is Steph Duran? …she was on the morning show for Movin’, everyone’s favorite…eh…ok, well there was Y98! Lots of people know her from Y98! No? Anyone that spends a lot of time in doctor’s waiting rooms at least…cancer patients and the like…alright, in all honesty if you are alive today you probably aren’t familiar with Duran, and if you do know her, then congrats on beating cancer! Of course, it’s a long shot, but you could be one of the 100 people in the “Please Bring Steph Duran back to St. Louis Radio!” club on Facebook. Anyway, our source says Duran has won the afternoon shift on 103.3 and with those 100 people on her side she should easily be the most popular radio show in St. Louis by about 37 people.

Of course that KLOU morning shift is still out there, but those of you on the beach should count on just staying there. We hear that the job is all but locked up. We don’t have firm enough sources to say a name right now, but after bringing Steph Duran in, they are set on a man for the morning show and seem to have one in their sights.

PETA Protests Children’s Hospital over Kitty Poking

Everyone’s favorite animal rights group PETA was in full force in St. Louis today protesting the St. Louis Children’s Hospital for something. Someone probably put the wrong color lipstick on a test monkey or something… The animal rights organization PETA held a protest today against St. Louis Children’s Hospital for its use of live cats in a pediatric emergency training course. The hospital’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Sessions Cole, says the cats are a critical part of the training. [Read More]

Eighth Grade Class Attacked by Yellow Jackets!

Ahhhhh! Breaking news from KSDK! A class of eighth grade students and their teachers were attacked!!!! …by yellow jackets…and it was last Thursday. One girl got stung a bunch of times, but she’s fine. Hmm. Seems like there should be more here…oh wait! Check out this picture KSDK made! Aaaaaaahhhhh! We swear to you that we did not make that. It’s legit, and stupid. It’s legitimately stupid. Sooo…on yeah. Aaaahhhhh! What happened to these poor students that had a total emergency when being attacked by that giant bug and that drop-shadowed font, but not enough for KSDK to report on it then? [Read More]

The Worst Music Video Ever Was Shot in a St. Louis Condo’s Kitchen

So St. Louis” is a music video making the rounds by Corle. In case you were wondering, the song is about being “so St. Louis”, and though it might just be a serious attempt to make an hit music video, it’s far better to view under the “lame tourism video” filter. (like this one for Cleveland)

“I could just say St. Louis over and over again, that would be cool.”

“I would turn your flat-billed hat a little sideways…”

“Well god Carl, of course I’m going to turn my hat a little sideways, I…”

“…ok! Well I think that’s all you need.”

“No, it needs something more. Something really obvious.”

“More obvious than saying ‘St. Louis’ over and over?”

“Yeah…wait! What if I stand in front of every building in the greater St. Louis area!”

“Bingo.”

Now as we all know, the most crucial scene in a rap video is the party scene. Every rapper spends roughly 92% of his time at fabulous parties, so showing one of them in a video is crucial as proof to the fact of your awesome rappines. This dude did his in some condo kitchen. It’s not bad though, I think I saw a sexy lady over to the left by the hot plate:

Ok ok ok. We’ll give the guy a break he did at least manage to get the Sir-Mix-A-Lot booty shot in there, so points for that:

…but if we are going to give him points for that, we will have to deduct for “making it rain” with singles:

That really seems more like “making it drizzle”.

Click through the jump to watch the whole video and see if he shot any of it in front of your house!

Post Dispatch to Raise Subscription Rates Soon

We hear the Post Dispatch is readying a price hike in its print subscription, which is both unsurprising and will be sure to annoy the Post’s subscribers who more than likely won’t understand the premium printing actual paper copies has now become. Though we don’t know the specific figures being bounced around, the current subscription price for a full week’s paper (including the Sunday issue) is just under $18 a month. [Read More]

Police Chase in Loop Ends Badly

Go have lunch as Cicero’s and watch them clean it all up!

We Prove That Being on Priceline’s Top Labor Day Destinations List is Actually Bad

St. Louis made #3 on a seemingly good list about the best places to go for Labor Day! What the hell is happening here? Something feels wrong…very wrong. We aren’t the only ones feeling it, right Ghostbusters? Exactly Dr. Venkman! “Human sacrifice! Dogs and cats…living together!” We are St. Louis. We don’t get on “good” lists and we don’t know how to take this. On the one hand it’s great to see St. [Read More]

Maybe You Shouldn’t Cross the Highway on Foot

Why did the three teenagers cross the busy highway Saturday? No sure, but that was a really bad idea. One of them got punted down the highway in what must have been a “Woah!” situation right up until you realized it was a child you were watching streak through the afternoon air. Seriously. That shit happened. Police said 14-year-old Ean McDaniel was struck on southbound I-55 at the Bates exit. Three boys were crossing the highway when one was struck by a red Volkswagen, shattering its front window. [Read More]

So, About That Whole KSDK Interview…

Late Friday afternoon, after exchanging emails with an assignment editor, KSDK reporter Ashley Yarchin came to Punching Kitty headquarters to do a story about our recent post “Craigslist: Anyone Seen the Cardinals Team We Had in April?” and in turn, Punching Kitty the blog. Once setting up all the one-man-show reporter gear in our office we talked on camera about when I started Punching Kitty, what its about, then specifically about the Craigslist post followed by a dramatic reading of my posting.
