Spanish Lake Native Makes a Movie About Spanish Lake

St. Louis’ Spanish Lake area is the subject of a new documentary, and if all the slowly zooming text with thumping soundtrack is the be believed, it’s the scene of a brutal murder of several slutty teenagers by a machette wielding crazy man that escaped from some place that doesn’t really matter…oh and you can’t kill the guy for some reason.

[Phillip] Morton, 32, is now an independent filmmaker based in Los Angeles. The rapid transformation of the north St. Louis County community he calls his hometown, though it has never been incorporated, forms the basis of his documentary, “Spanish Lake.”

“I really wanted to research all the dynamics that went into the phenomenon of white flight in Spanish Lake,” Morton said in a recent telephone interview from Los Angeles.

Never mind, it’s a documentary about race and economic boundaries. Slowing zooming text timed to musical crescendos used to mean something, but now just any thing can use that it seems!

The area was sparsely populated before World War II but quickly grew with an influx of whites from north St. Louis.

As recently as 1970, Spanish Lake was 99 percent white and 1 percent black.

But the 1970s also marked the beginning of a mass migration of African-Americans from the city of St. Louis. Many left failed housing complexes such as Pruitt-Igoe to settle in government-subsidized Section 8 housing in North County.

The documentary looks interesting and, in a lot of ways, seems like an accidental sequel [Editor's Note: Can documentaries have sequels?!] to the acclaimed, and also St. Louis focused, documentary “The Pruitt-Igoe Myth“. Morgan is wrapping up production now in preparation for festival showings later this year, and hopes to land a distributer in the process. We’ll keep you posted if we hear of a release data or a local showing.

Here’s a little known fact: I, The Editor, was born in Spanish Lake. Everything was great until we saw a total drug deal going down a few houses down our block from us, and while looking back it might have just been our black mailman delivering a package to the also black family down the street, but alas, we’ll never know what was in that “L.L. Bean” package. Anyway, we high-tailed it out of there to St. Charles County. It’s not that we thought crime only happened in Spanish Lake, it’s that we were far more comfortable with “White People Crimes” like high school girls shoplifting panties from the Dillard’s in the mall, the kid with the hemp necklace and the endless supply of Grateful Dead t-shirts growing weed in his parents detached guest house, and serial murderers that eat the bodies and make underwear out of the nippular area.

Race Map of St. Louis Based on Census Data Looks About Right

Eric Fischer was inspired by Bill Rankin’s Chicago map of racial and ethnic divides which took the recent Census data and dotted a city map with colored dots equaling groups of the same race…so he did the same thing for other cities. Not sure if this really counts as being “inspired”. “Thought that it was cool so I did the exact same thing.” might be closer.

Below is Fischer’s map of St. Louis. Each dot is 25 people. Red is white, blue is black, green is asian, orange is hispanic and gray is “other”/white guys that wear their hat sideways.

Ok…we crappily overlaid a Google map on this image for a little clarity.

No surprises here, but it is interesting that South City is far and away the most diverse area in the region. It’s like a real city right there in the middle of this other city which is right next to the two other segregated areas. How lovely!

For more clarity, we are  over-overlaying some informative notes:

For slightly less clarity, we are now going to overlay a photo of popular morning anchor man John Pertzborn:

Hopefully this was informative.

The Urban Assault Ride Returns to St. Louis

The Urban Assault Ride is coming back to St. Louis on August 15th! If you’ve heard of it, I’m sure you’re excited and if you’ve never heard of it, this bearded gentleman on the right riding a big wheel should get you sufficiently up to speed.

The Urban Assault Ride™ is a truly unique cycling event…and quickly becoming one of the biggest in country! Here’s how it works: You and your teammate will set out on a city-wide quest for ‘checkpoints’ on your favorite two-wheeled steeds.  At each checkpoint, you’ll drop your bikes and complete a funky/adventurous obstacle course, then remount your bikes and hit the streets for more.

The goal is to complete all the checkpoints in the shortest amount of time.

At the finish line is a beer garden, in case you needed any more motivation to go along with that pride you tell people you have but deep inside you know its just about beer.

This years course starts in Forest Park and heads through checkpoints at: Big Shark bicycles on Delmar, Mesa Cycles on Big Bend, BicycleWORKS on Shenandoah, REI on Brentwood and the City Museum. Apparently there are also two “mystery” checkpoints. I heard one of them is at your mom’s house. Zing!!!

You can get more information on the Urban Assault ride at urbanassaultride.com/stlouis and sign up here.

News to Only White People: Black Guys Get Pulled Over a Lot

Posted by The Editor on 04 Jun 2010 /

Hey guess what 2010, your not really all that advanced and progressive as Twitter would have you believe. Black guys are still getting pulled over at an alarmingly higher rate.

The first report, issued in 2001, said black motorists in Missouri were 30 percent more likely than whites to be pulled over, when considering total populations of driving-age residents by race. For 2009, the year that Koster reported upon today, blacks were 62 percent more likely than whites to be stopped.

[Emphasis added.] This seems like something we should be shocked about, but I just can’t muster the surprise. Hell the other day I leaned out of my car and fired an automatic weapon at the side of a children’s hospital and I only got pulled over later on because the cops had found all those bullets I “dropped”. My experience was in stark contrast to that of the “Ladue Black Guy” Jerry who after being pulled over every day last year when he left his house for work opted for “voluntary parole” just so he could check in every morning and save some commute time.

That last part was a joke. It wasn’t everyday, the Ladue cops don’t work on Sundays.

Hispanics are even less likely than whites to be stopped, according to that formula, although Hispanics were twice as likely as whites to be searched — a rate even higher than the rate of police searches of black motorists they stop.

So if the cops do make time in their busy pulling over black dudes with the occasional white guy for cover schedule, they might grab a hispanic guy. …but watch out, if they do get you, its gonna count. They’re gloving up for you buddy.

Turning to the section on those with Middle Eastern decent, it was just most blank page that said, “We don’t care about terrorists getting pulled over.” with a vulgar little drawing.

Seemed like an odd choice.

March 3rd Mayoral Primary Race Warming to Room Temperature

Driving around the other day I saw a “Reelect Slay” sign, which of course means its that time again!  The Demacratic Mayoral Primary is on March 3rd and Slay squares off against former Alderman and former second-fiddle to Slay in the last election, Irene J. Smith….oh and some one else, but seriously…who cares?  The fact I even know Smith is running is because of an article in the Post about how bad ass Mayor Slay is with his campaign and because “she” started following my personal Twitter account!

Slay blogs (kinda) but Smith Twitters!  Are we looking at a Ron Paul situation with Smith?  Maybe!  Go iSmith!

Of course, it would really give her marks if she agreed to an interview of some kind for Punching Kitty…just saying…
