Kyle Turley on Weed: “That Would be the One Bob.”

A recent Washington University School of Medicine study discussed the use, or rather misuse, of painkillers by current and former NFL players. The study, commissioned by ESPN’s Outside the Lines, found that 52 percent of former players used prescription pain meds during their active days, and 15 percent of that group admitted to misusing drugs in the last month.

“That’s a very large number in a population that, at that age, we wouldn’t expect to see much use of these substances at all,” Compton said. “Most typical 30- and 40-year olds aren’t taking pain relievers, and they’re not misusing them, so that’s a much higher than expected rate.”

One of the study’s main sources of antidotal information was friend-of-the-site, former Ram and Chief, and master of the homeless guy chic look, Kyle Turley:

Turley said it was commonplace to find comfort in the form of two Miller Lites. But the real relief, Turley said, would come when members of the Saints’ medical staff routinely handed out the prescription painkiller Vicodin on the flights home.

“The trainers and the doctors used to go down the aisle and say, ‘Who needs what?’” Turley said. “If you had something hurting and needed a painkiller to take the edge off so you could sleep that night, they made sure you had it.”

Turley was interviewed on the ESPN Outside the Lines program Sunday morning by Bob Ley. When the questioning turned to Turley’s current method of self-medication, things got awesome: (The clip has been transcribed below, but if you’re at home skipping work because you’re afraid of the snow, click here to see the clip.)

Ley: Is it fair to say that at times or how often you may have used more than prescribed than over the counter medication?

Turley: I try to keep things personally more on the…uh…alternative medical thing. I don’t really believe in all these pain killers they prescribe people. It’s unfortunate we allow these doctors to create these chemicals and put (them) in our bodies and yet a simple thing like a plant that grows out of the ground is continuing to be illegal when it provieds a number of medical uses and relief for individuals pain and all kinds of other ailments…and, you know, I try to think that life can be better as long as I take care of myself and allow nature to help me…

Ley: Can I assume…the plant you’re referring to is…is cannabis right?

Turley: …uh yes. That would be the one Bob.

Oddly, Kyle was red-eyed in front of a gold curtain for the entire interview. Only after the cameras were turned off did we get a peak and what was back there…

Phish concert. Figures.

Friend-of-the-site, former St. Louis Ram and current country music artist, Kyle Turley will be making a stop in St. Louis Sunday to play at the Old Rock House after two of his former teams go at it in the Edward Jones Dome, which by the way is officially no longer the worst NFL dome, so big congrats there for the Rams!

Congrats are also in order for the Kyle Turley Band as rumor has it that our editor will be out at the show personally taking some photos and giving out stickers.

Doors open at 11:30a ($6 cover) with the show starting a half hour after the Rams finish beating the Chiefs.

First person to make a Mike Martz joke or references throwing a helment to Kyle wins the chance to be “obvious joke guy” the rest of the night.

Kyle Turley Has the Last Word on Poopstock

Lets be honest, we’ve called Kings of Leon all kinds of fun things in the last few days after their now infamous pouting scene after getting pooped on made its way around the globe. Nothing too bad though, just light hearted jokes.

7/24 – They’re giant pussies.

7/24 – Jesus these guys are freaking retarded.

7/24 – Congratulations, you just outted yourself to even your most die-hard fans that you are no more “rock” than Hanna Montana.

7/23 – Sounds like Kings of Leon had a serious case of Rock “star” sandy vagina.

Ahem.

What do we know though? Yes Kings of Leon are in fact little bitch-asses. It’s a fact, but we should have more reason that just us saying so. We need to have some big bad ass guy tell you so you know its true…Well we know a guy. Kyle Turley was a certified bad ass on the football field, currently he’s a bad ass on the stage, and a friend-of-the-site. We reached out for a comment on what he thought about this whole situation with Kings of Leon. We were not disappointed.

“I guess when you make it to the top, you don’t have to take it in the mouth anymore [in public]” – Kyle Turley

Thanks Kyle. We knew you’d know just want to say.

By the way, Kyle is on tour, so to check out where he’s at these days and pick up his new album head to Gridiron Records.com

Kyle Turley Talks to Punching Kitty About Music and Brain Injuries

DSC_0374_croppedKyle Turley was traded to the St. Louis Rams in March of 2003, which seemed to set in to motion a series of crazy crap for Turley: injuries, a battle with then head coach Mike Martz and then more injuries that resulted in him leaving the Rams and having a short stint with the cross-state Chiefs.

What’s Turley up to now though?  Music.  Country music.  Good country music.  [Editor's Note: You have no idea how hard that was for us to write that!]

We caught up with Turley to talk about his music, and what else he is doing these days.

Punching Kitty: We aren’t country fans by any stretch, but we have to admit, your new stuff is great.  In particular, the song “Flying Helmets” [Editor's Note: If you don't get the title, watch this.]

Kyle Turley: Thanks brother!…I’m glad you dig it, I’m just trying to make music that represents me all around. My influences growing up were pretty wide ranged, from Jonny Cash to Slayer. I’m not really trying to copy anybody with my album, it’s just me is all I can say. The songs up on my myspace now are a good representaion of what is to come with my full CD but I have been working my ass off and playing alot around Nashville and the influences keep coming with all the talent here. I can tell though that the songs to come on the full length are going to wake some people up.

PK: The song “Flying Helmets” is going to get some people talking for sure.  You even drop the f-bomb on Mike Martz! (Listen to the song, in its entirety below!)

KT: The title of my album is ‘Anger Management’ ( they made me go to it after I threw that guy’s helmet) and I have alot to get off my chest from the crazy life I was able to live being in the NFL. My music is about real issues dealing with real people and situations life has delt me both good and bad but just a whole lot of truth and a bit of wisdom I gained along the way. Music is the best form of anger management I could have ever prescribed for myself…

PK: Anything else you want to let people know about?

KT: I am donating 100% of download sales of my song ‘Final Drive’ to www.gridirongreats.org, it’s about a bit of my own life but I wrote it about all the guys who have suffered from Traumatic Brain Injury from contact sports and the Military.

Thanks to Kyle Turley for taking the time to talk with us, but a screw you also goes to Turley for actually making a non-crap country song and no longer letting me say “I hate country.  Its all crap.”

You can listen to the full song “Flying Helmets” in the video below.
