KFNS Now Offers Free SPAM to Those That Sign Up!

A reader forwarded us an e-mail they recently got from KFNS, one of the approximately 17 sports talk stations in town, to show us how amazingly crappy their “E-Blast” is. They were right, it suucccckkksss! …but we weren’t exactly surprised and gather that the other stations in town offer more of the same, so they should all be paying attention instead of laughing at the back of the classroom while we whip out the ruler on poor KFNS.

In a word, we would describe this email as “insulting”. Insulting that they think their listeners…scratch that…their die-hard listeners that actually sign up for clubs, are stupid. They must if they are calling this exclusive content. We bet the KFNS brass also thinks they’re fooling people when one of their hosts does a live read just after they come back from a commercial break “Frank’s talking so it’s not an ad! He must just really want me to go to that tire dealer because it relates to the Cardinals somehow!” Come on. Despite the listener sample that calls in to your station to suggest we trade Holliday and Pujols for Jeter, they aren’t all that stupid.

We even went through this copy of the “E-Blast” and scratched out all the ad copy to get down to the actual “exclusive content”:

As you can see, it’s mostly ads. Ads their salespeople are running around selling you as an “engaged listener…who we have full email access to!” There is one thing that isn’t technically an ad though. It’s the box on the top left of the email…the one that’s telling you to sign up to be a KFNS Insider, which is kind of an ad…oh and also completely freaking pointless because the fact that you got this email means you already signed up for their club! Jesus. One little spot for content and you waste it on an internal ad that by definition won’t get any action because the users have already done what you’re asking them to do. It’s like sending out emails telling people to go get email accounts, or going around to the retarded folks that watch the show NCIS and asking them if you could hit them in the head repeatedly until they suffer severe enough brain damage to be labeled officially retarded and start watching NCIS. We guess you can technically be “more retarded”, which would involve also watching NCIS: Los Angeles. Ok, the latter example wasn’t great, but you get the idea.

To the people: Don’t sign up for these. You don’t get “deals”, you just get your email farmed out to any jackoff company that has a few pennies to give to [insert ration station here].

To the stations: Maybe actually deliver some exclusive content in these? …oh wait, that would mean you’d have to worry about actually making exclusive content, which really would need to come after the other content you don’t have enough of. We see your point now. It is much easier to just shove ads down the throats of suckers…er…we mean “cherished listeners”!

KFNS Actually Found a Way to Reach Fewer People Tuesday Morning

If you noticed a distinct lack of “sports” talk that is 8 parts gay jokes and 2 parts Mizzou talk, its probably because your only choice for sports talk was 101ESPN‘s Mike & Mike in the Morning after Monday night’s storm kicked over the flattened out coat hanger 590 AM KFNS uses to broadcast.

The morning static was confirmed by the station’s morning show host, Tim McKernan…

McKernan, who’s InsideSTL.com handles most of the day’s programming on KFNS, did their show through the internets until the station came back on line a few hours later.

KFNS themselves however, decided to pretend none of this happened, or realizes that no one cares about losing one of the many “sports talk” station in the city for a few hours since there was nary a mention on their site, KFNS.com or their Twitter profile as of this writing.

Meanwhile the folks at KFNS sister station KSLG 1380 remained on the air so that the homeless guy sitting outside the 1380 offices on the Landing could get somewhat clear audio of…you know, we have no idea what’s on that station. Not even enough for a joke. Did they go out too? Not really sure. There are CB radio conversations that have more listeners.

Grand Slam Sports Buys KFNS and JoeSportsFanSTL.com

Friday afternoon the word started trickling out that local group, Grand Slam Sports’ bid to buy the “other” sports talk radio station in town, KFNS (590 AM), became official. Not only that, Grand Slam Sports also announced they had purchased the local sports blog JoeSportsFanSTL.com. Their bid to buy the other other sports talk station you haven’t heard of KSLG (1380 AM) is still in the works.

Grand Slam Sports, which consists of a group of local investors, bought KFNS from Big League Broadcasting for $1.4 million.

Greene also announced Friday that Grand Slam Sports acquired JoeSportsFanSTL.com and will partner with site founders Josh Bacott and Matt Sebek to provide St. Louis sports content on a daily basis. The content from JoeSportsFanSTL.com will appear daily on KFNS.

The announcement was all but official about buying KFNS especially since the Atlanta-based group Big League Broadcasting has been trying to unload that property for some time now. Also, it was great to hear the guys from JoeSportsFanSTL.com getting some well-deserved jack to be officially apart of KFNS, but this development wasn’t shocking since Grand Slam Sports’ face-man Dave Greene has had a long-standing relationship with JoeSportsFan’s Josh Bacott and Matt Sebek.

What is surprising is the amount of money the Grand Slam Sports team is throwing around these days.

$1.4 million for KFNS…throw in a few grand for JoeSportsFanSTL.com…KSLG is in the crapper, sure, but even the price for the “stick” (the rights and hardware to broadcast) alone will be quite a bit, currently rumored to be in the $350k neighborhood. Throw in the STL Sports Magazine, and you’re looking at a lot of money invested in radio and magazines.  Two of the crappiest areas to have money in.  Anyone know if Greene has any interest in buying this steam engine factory I have for sale?

Kidding aside, his ventures must be doing well enough to fund his 1+ Million purchases last week, we just couldn’t ge comfortable being in that boat, even with one-third of the sports radio dog fight out of commission. 101 ESPN has clamped down on the sport radio market and their grip might tighten if they get the rights to co-broadcast Cardinal games next season. Greene has said all along though, that its money that is the measure, not ratings. Ratings may not matter today, but don’t they predict tomorrow? Greene’s efforts to get bloggers and the InsideSTL partnership aboard show he’s at least aware of the fact that radio and print alone don’t make much of an empire, a sinking radio ship (that can’t be heard come nightfall) needs more than just a couple of internet life vests.

…unless they wanna buy us. Then forget that crap. Go AM radio!

Did We Miss Anything?

Posted by The Editor on 22 Jun 2010 /

If you didn’t know, we were on vacation most of last week (and it turned out, yesterday as well…whoops!).

So, what did we miss?

Now back in the saddle, here’s what we could figure out:

1. A few months back, two cops from LaGrange shot a chained dog. Now its a viral video. (See what I did there? I linked to a story the RFT did instead of just doing the repeat thing which isn’t our style…but happens. )

2. St. Louis area TGI Friday’s might be pulling a “Wendy’s”. TGI Friday’s? Eh. No big deal. You can always just go to Applebee’s or any of the other 30+ area places like them. Wendy’s though? Please come back! The nuggets, the side salads, the fries you dip in to your Frosty! So good…but not good enough to drive over to 170 and Page for.

3. A couple of AM stations talked like they mattered. KFNS is going to buy KSLG?! OMG! This is huge news! If only we were in town and had the $57 bucks in cash in our pockets! Damn.

*knock knock*

Us: Hello?

Mr. Opportunity: Hey. It’s Opportunity. Just wanted to let you know that I tried to find you last week, but you were gone.

Us: I know. Took a little vacation.

Mr. Opportunity: Well you could have had an AM radio station that came with a free drive-time show hosted by some ass that like to hear himself talk for free.

Us: Oh man…damn.

Mr. Opportunity: Yup. Sucks for you.

Us: Who did  you find Opportunity?

Mr. Opportunity: I found Dave Greene from KFNS. He was working on his time machine idea again, slipped and hit his head on the sink and decided radio still made money and he bought another AM station! …totally hit him up at the right time. Made some good commission.

Us: Nice. What’s he going to do with two AM stations?

Mr. Opportunity: Pretend he’s important and owns something that matters right up until he has to sell it like everyone else has.

Us: Ah. Makes sense…by that time, surely in the distant future, AM radio will be seen by everyone as effectively gone for all but a few key stations with huge signals.

Mr. Opportunity: Yup. Jan, 3rd 2011. Seems far away doesn’t it?

The Morning After Moves to KFNS

When there’s smoke there’s fire, and we have been swamped with both anonymous tips and confirmations from reliable sources all saying that 1380′s popular morning show The Morning After will be moving to competing AM sports talk venue KFNS as with in the next 30-45 days.

The morning show, staffed by front man Tim McKernan, Jim Hayes and Doug Vaughn has been KSLG 1380AM’s only decent property for some time now, with the rest of their day-part covered by bottom feeding shows and closing out with St. Louis’ own Glenn Beck of sports, Kevin Slaten who has had a history of good ratings but has slid dramatically in the last few rating periods to a new low recently.  Though The Morning After gave 1380 its only show worth a damn, that show brought with it many of the day parts that have failed so mightily recently as 1380 made a deal with McKernan, owner of the local sports and semi-attractive girls’ tits-focused website InsideSTL, to purchase the morning hours until midday. The experiment, though cheap to run for 1380, has thus far been a failure.

1380′s counterpart in this AM sports talk midget fight is KFNS, who is pulling the Morning After back in to the fold after the much talked about breakup of the original show The Morning Grid that featured McKernan, Hayes and Fox2′s Martin Kilcoyne who currently works at KFNS doing the morning show and will now be shifted to middays.

What does all this mean? Not much. 1380 is probably one step closer to the radio grave, seeing as they are apparently letting McKernan walk after the ink on his last 1380 contract is barely dry.  The other inconsequential but annoying outcome will be the inevitable Dan Ceasar piece in the Post Dispatch where we all get do enjoy KFNS manager Dave Greene blather on about how they are doing great even though no one listens to their station. Either he’s a liar or advertisers in this city are amazingly dumb…frankly either or both could be true.

Look for some over-hyped announcement on InsideSTL in the next few weeks.

Also look for a steady stream of butter-faces and butter-everythings being photographed with plenty of overly photoshopped side-boob on InsideSTL where they will claim these “girls nextdoor” are totally hot! …to us its just one more reminder that in St. Louis, the “girl next door” is on meth, not all that attractive yet overly-hyped.

No you (or your girlfriend/wife) though. You (or her) are totally hot. You know who I’m talking about…not you though. You (or her) are totally boneable.

Something is Different With ‘The Morning After’…

We didn’t care one bit about the news a few weeks back that sports talk host Tim McKernan, in conjunction with InsideSTL.com, was buying the first half of the day on the stumpy-towered 1380 AM, but we have to say, the usually funny Morning After show on 1380 has tanked recently.  The new focus on interviewing broads for another show has taken the time that was usually filled with actual talk about sports.

More and more we find ourselves flipping to Mike and Mike on competitor 101ESPN in the morning and sometimes even sitting through their seemingly endless commercial breaks.
