Whatever the Opposite of “Breaking News” is: Two St. Louis Radio Guys Your Parents Listen to Are Angry With Each Other

KTRS’s  (550 AM) McGraw Milhaven and KMOX’s (1120AM) Charlie Brennan both called the Riverfront Times to complain about each other in this month’s edition of “Irrelevant Radio People That Think Anyone Gives a Shit About Their Stupid Arguments Over Who Gets What Guest First.”

As usual, lets have Mr. Blockquote fill you in on the details we didn’t actually acquire ourselves.

Mr. Blockquote: Ugh do I have too? This story is lame!

…um maybe just do what I ask and not talk back Blockquote…

Mr. Blockquote: Ok, fine! Radio guy #1 (Milhaven) wanted to book someone on his show, but then radio guy #2 (Brennan) got him first and then guy #1 called the RFT or something to bitch about how guy #1 always gets these guests first which I guess he was thinking nit was going to make people think guy #2 was a jerk, but it actually just makes guy #1 look like a whiny guy that can’t get the guests he wants. Oh and then guy #2 dropps that he’s bitter about not getting invited to do guy #1′s defunct local cable show.

…um, dude? That’s note really a quote, it’s just you horribly and aggressively summarizing the story.

Mr. Blockquote: That’s all your getting.

Ok, frankly we don’t blame you, but we felt like we had to mention the story anyway.

If you’re one of the people interested in the full story, check it out at the Riverfront Times and then remember Matlock reruns come on UPN at 3:30pm (just before dinner).

Dear Radio Guys, we think both of you are pretty good on air, but neither one of you are wearing this little tiff particularly well. Now, if this is some sort of a ratings ploy, it’s an interesting idea, but we’d re-think the implementation.

KMOX.com Has the Best Story Suggestions

Posted by The Editor on 20 Oct 2010 /

You know it really sounds like the best way to “suggest” new articles to a reader is pull the keywords from a headline and then search your back stories. Simple!

Example: “Man Gives Out Puppies to Poor Kids”

Find the keywords: “Man Gives Out Puppies to Poor Kids“

Go get some other fun stories about puppies and kids. Everyone wins!

Turns out not so simple as our tipster found out:

The suggested stories on “What a Great Father-Son Project” were:

“City worker fired after being connected to teens death” and “East St. Louis man charged with DUI in wreck that killed son” …hence the sad face with only one eye crying.

Such is life in St. Louis that even things related to making stuff with your son leads to a bring down. Probably shouldn’t even waste your time and just drink heavily, throwing the empties at your kid. Get him prepared for that hard St. Louis living.

Mark Edwards, Long-Time y98 Boss Fired

After six and a half years at the helm of St. Louis radio station y98, Mark Edwards has been fired. We were tipped this yesterday afternoon and confirmed it later last night via Edwards’ own Twitter feed:

…and then later he stumped for work via a mass email sent out to contacts and later posted to his blog:

Bottom line is I’m not a big fan of sitting around and I’m ready to climb on a new horse. Maybe you know of a job that is just screaming for a guy like me. Perhaps you are acquainted with someone who should get to know me. Please feel free to share my contact information, which is below, with every person you have ever met. The quicker I get back to work, the less chance there will be of you getting another e mail like this.

Threatening continued SPAM is certainly one way to go about getting a new gig.

y98, though forgettable, has remained a constant in St. Louis for some time now, so the surprise move to axe the head man must mean a change in direction. Being that this was a surprise to even Edwards means the change coming is probably not small. Our initial thoughts go back to when CBS, y98′s parent company, recently regained the rights to air Cardinal games. At the time we heard this:

Our guess? CBS promised the Cardinals that they too would be on the more robust FM signal soon. How? By killing KEZK and moving KMOX to 102.5 FM, leaving 1120 AM to be a more sports-heavy talk sister station to KMOX, and of course, simulcast Cardinal games on both signals.

Maybe KEZK survived the cut, making y98 the station to be killed in favor of a new FM KMOX? Huh?! Maybe we just remembered Edwards was in charge of KEZK as well?! Anyone care? Is this a required move in their contract with the Cardinals? What do you think Reese Witherspoon smells like? Is there anything in my teeth? That hairy palms thing is a myth right?

The Cardinals Radio Broadcasts Go Back to KMOX

In what is no doubt the most anyone has ever talked about radio since…um…I don’t know…jesus radio metaphors are hard…probably because no one cares about radio. Except for the St. Louis sports media who still thinks its really really really really really important.

As first reported today on STLtoday.com, the team announced late this afternoon that it will return its radio broadcasts to KMOX next season after five years at KTRS, where they had been airing after a 51-year run at KMOX.

The Cardinals choose KMOX over the other options of staying at KTRS and moving to sports talk upstart WXOS, 101.1 FM saying “fan sentiment and feedback” was a major factor in the decision. Some would say they choose wrong, that AM radio, despite KMOX’s legendary signal, is somehow more dead than FM radio. True, but our initial guess is that the Cardinals asked that very question and KMOX’s owner CBS Radio had answer.

Our initial guess seems to be lining up with the rumors we have heard after talking to a few people after the news broke. Our guess? CBS promised the Cardinals that they too would be on the more robust FM signal soon. How? By killing KEZK and moving KMOX to 102.5 FM, leaving 112o AM to be a more sports-heavy talk sister station to KMOX, and of course, simulcast Cardinal games on both signals.

With that information in hand, the Cardinals had the perfect answer. Going to KMOX certainly wins by the old-folks crowd, and the move to FM nullifies any benefits that WOXS was offering. No brainer.

…you know what would be super cool though, is if someone could invent a device that also broadcasts video of the game along with the audio. That would really be something! You wouldn’t want Mike Shannon on there though, he gets a little sloppy. You’d want someone smooth, well spoken, but knows when to shut up and, of course, above reproach…eh, screw it. This guy will do:
